My screen is running away from me! (Port issue supplementary)

Hey guys. I'm having an issue that started a few days ago.

Essentially, I'll be playing Civ4 BTS, and my screen will start going off in some direction as if I'm holding my mouse to the side of the screen to scroll. Bringing up a menu of any sort - the Escape menu, or the civilopedia - will stop it, but it will do it again very soon.

Maybe it's a side-effect of alt-tabbing a lot? The game is installed via Steam. I am running Vista, and I assure you my computer specs are sufficient for running the game. Any suggestions guys?

Also, while we're here, what port do I need to open up for playing Direct IP connection multiplayer games with friends? We use ventrilo so the voice chat port is unnecessary.

Thanks! :)

You haven't said what sort of mouse you have, but that sort of behaviour is often a sign of a sticky mouse. In the days with mice with balls I would have said clean the ball and surrounding rollers, if you have an optical mouse, check for dirt/debris interfering with the sensor. Also check the connection of the mouse to the computer. It could be that your mouse is starting to die though, have you got another you could swap over to see if it does it with a different mouse?

On the port side for multiplayer, there is a thread stickied in this forum here that should have the information that you need. If you need more you will probably find better multiplayer help in the multiplayer section of this Civ 4 forum.

It's true my (optical) mouse is a bit old. It might be time for a replacement. But no, the mouse stays in the middle of the screen, right where I put it - at least, I think so. I'll have to check!

Thanks :)

I also have this problem for some time i even went and got a new mouse but it didn't solve it i tend to find that it happens when i hold a direction arrow on the keyboard to move across the map and press the mouse to select some thing at the same time
