And that Death is in my opinion the best! I don't like the fall on the back one and spin death and fall on the knees, too much for the death! :D you got stabbed you touch the wound and fall, Fin!

I've never seen someone get stabbed, but I would presume that it would involve people falling over pretty quickly. IMO the death anim. looks a bit like he's sitting down for a cup of tea. :coffee:

But overall, great first unit. :goodjob: I look forward to Diomedes.

I THINK that his death animation is just slow in that preview, although the only time I've managed to test this unit in-game so far has been to quickly make sure that all the animations work, and to make sure that I don't get any other nasty errors when I use it.

Looks nice and well animated.:goodjob: :)

Looks awesome! Great concept, too. I think the model itself is somewhat better than the animations -- at least from what I can tell from the previews. The animations seem somewhat wooden, to me, but then that might change in game (dunno). Regardless, it's a keeper in my opinion, especially for a first unit!

Congratulations on your first unit. I hope it is the first of many.
Considering this is your first unit, you did just a wonderful job animating it.

On the fidget... I think there is a bit too much movement. The spear should either remain planted or mostly so. Wiggle it if you want, but having it come down so far will be distracting. Also, the nodding down should be slow, the snap awake should be fast.

On the death, good idea. Reasonably well executed. But much too slow. Given that it is a basic flop death, it needs to be fast. As he is falling backwards, his weight is unsupported by his legs, and so should just drop and flop. If you want a slower death, look at the units where they keep the legs under the body for a few seconds. I did this in the viking and in the troll preview too. Just variations to play with. Liking the tummy grab.

On the victory. It would work better to have his arms come slightly forward and basicaly go straight up rather than the sideways flapping approach.

On the attack. Well done. The spear has a nice smooth attack. Looks very realistic. There seems to be a slight foot slide on the return, but it is not distracting I would suggest that he lift his feet slightly more on both the attack and the return.

On the fortify. The foot slide here is more noticable and consequently more distracting.

Over all:
Good to very good animation and modeling. It is definately a keeper!:goodjob:
Really hard to believe you got it so right on the first try.

You know, for someone who is as tormented with alphanumeric symbols as he is, Bjornlo sure likes to type!

Thanks again, all!

@Bjornlo: I'll bear in mind what you said when I make Diomedes. :)
No worries, the only things to fix with this one are so minor (mostly just tweak a few FLCs in civ3flcEdit). I'll be using this unit in my game, it is not just a good 1st unit, it is a good unit period.

Well, it is easier to be short. But less helpful. It is moderately time consuming to carefully look at a unit and analyze it for +/-.
And, I figure if I torment myself with enough of this symbology I might build up an immunity to them.

Yeah, Bjornlo... I owe much to you and your willingness to do just that: analyze it for strengths and weaknesses. That's how we conscript unit creators learn and improve. I thrive on constructive criticism... so: Thanks!

When I first looked at the title I read Macedonean Spearmen ;).

Very good unit!

Edit:
Sorry for the bump... I came out of exile. The rules are coming back to me

Big Edit:
I cant read! 5 days isn't a bump.

Yeh- I've done about 2/3rds of his animations, and am trying to work out how to make him- in one 15-frame attack animation- hold the spear so that he can make a downwards thrust attack- like the Lybian Mercinary. And then make the attack. It's hard to make it look convincing :D
