Name as many Civ3ers here as you can

"I guess I would be present on lists made by PBEMers, maybe by some people from the creation & customization forum. Not sure though."

Don't worry, if I was ever bored enough to particiapte in Tomoyoda's mind games(:p), you'd surely be on the list ;)

When the ISDG is over, I could reveil a post about Kemal's worker turn number crunching.... An excel sheet containing 20 workers, saving 3 worker turns, in 5 civ turns or so..... Anyway: Arguable indeed!

Of course it is arguable, as opinions always are. However, to be honest, I don't want to get into a debate about it, and that was not my intention when I made that statement. Another way of saying it: SirPleb is the best player in Civdom, in my opinion.

What lead me to state such? For starters, when one looks at the results of past GOTMs, the one player who always finishes near the top of the list (and many times in first place) is none other than SirPleb. I know that statistics could prove otherwise, but my gut is to say that there has been no other player who has been as consistently outstanding as SirPleb. Not only is he an supremely talented player, but he is also a gentleman and always gives insightful comments.

Although it is obvoius that I esteem him highly, make no mistake, his character and personal qualities are not clouding my judgement. Again, SirPleb is the best player I've ever encountered.

@JonathanValjean,
Thanks for making me 7th on your list. So someone reads my GOTM posts.

You're welcome! :)

Oh yes, I really enjoyed your write-up about GOTM37. Congratulations on a great game! I was amazed by how many techs you were able to steal. Amazing! 700AD finish with 11000+ Jason points. Well done! :goodjob:

My luck wasn't as good in GOTM37... I was doing very well until around 650BC, when Carthage declared war on me. I was able to hold my ground for a long time after that for the most part, and actually conquered Carthage eventually, but, to make a long story short: I had been focusing too much on infrastructure and was caught a bit offguard by Carthage's declaration of war... If only they would have declared around 300BC, I would have been ready. As it was, I was never able to fully recover to the point of dominance in the game. There is always next time. :)

Ok here is who I remember (sorry if I miss spell your name).

SirPleb (If not no. 1 then very close)
JonathanValjean (how do you forget some one that just put you on their list?)
Kuningas
klarius
Megalou
bradleyfeanor
grahamiam
DJMGator13
UB40 (I remember this one because I'm just a little over 40ish.)
civ_steve
Ronald
ainwood (our GOTM king)
AlanH
Civgeek
rrau
A'AbarachAmadan
chunkymonkey (just a cool name)
Mistfit
Roland Ehnström
Renata (and she is a cat person!)
Tomoyo (this name is just all over)
Turner_727
Padma
Chieftess

I'm sure if I think about it this list would double.

It is arguable, but maybe we shouldn't do it here. :D Anyway I wonder how we could "measure" some players' strength in Civ3 : should it be over a few GOTMs ? a few random solo maps ? a few PBEMs ? a few RBCiv Epics ? a bit of everything ? I for one am a fan of 1v1 PBEM, not only because it is a REAL match, but also because I think Kemal would be far better at it. :scan: I mean, beating the AIs in the GOTM is always the same receipe, whereas against a human... groucho

My bet is on Kemal in a 1v1 PBEM against SirPleb, the same against Sirian. Of course I highly respect both of them. :)

Its probably fair to say their are a handful of players who could beat each other depending on the vagaries of the RND and the starting position who occupy the pantheon.

Aeson
SirPleb
Dave Mc
Sirian
Arathorn
Kemal

Most are well known. SirPleb' GOTM games are legendary. He's certainly done more to show how top players play than anyone else.

Kemal is probably the best PBEM player I've seen. I'm astounded by his levels of mathematical analysis. I guess to him Civ is pretty much an exercise in number crunching.

Dave Mc would be the most fearsome live opponent. Legendary rusher. Also holds the record for the earliest launch iirc.

@Krys
col : you explicitely told me you had enough of Civ3. But you're still one of the best CDZers around.
Some of the family issues that led to my retirement have receded a little. To quote Fast Eddie "I'm back" and playing again.

Yeah col, it would depend much on a varied range of settings and pure luck, so that's why I talked of several games (either several of the same kind, or a few of different kinds : GOTMs, 1v1 PBEMs, RBCiv Epics, etc...). All I know is that having a high score doesn't impress me, what impresses me is to win the fastest you can (number of turns), or beat your foes in PBEMs everytime (Kemal  ). I guess we're only dreaming of "games of the Civ3 lifespan". Final Civ3 tourney ? :scan:

YEAH, co(o)l ! Happy for you, I hope you'll manage it and everything gets back to enjoying your life in England. But : you told me that well before your problems... :crazyeye: Or does this "come back" give you the will to play Civ3 again (or was it PBEMs you had enough of ?) ? If so, I'd be pleased to challenge you, respectable chess player. After that you'll be able to beat me hard in that best game of the world ever (called chess). And we miss you in Diplo as well. :)

@ Stapel : You're playing against col ??? Lucky man ! When was it started ? Before the Y2K's bug ? ;)

I fully sustain the above with all due respect to other great players in Poly, CFC or wherever. The guy is a gentleman, a talented player and always helps out. What more could he have to strive upon perfection ? Well, he isn't Spanish, minor flaw

Dell19 : apart from a WWII game, I don't see you much, sorry, but that's not a critic, you decide on your own level of involvment.

I've tended to join more PBEMs here although tere is a chance that another PBEM will be moving to CDZ soon...

My list is heavily weighted toward G/CoTM as it is where I hang out:

Nichelle
SirPleb
AlanH
Ainwood
Aeson
DaveMcW
Kuningas
Dynamic
Ronald
WackenOpenAir
civ_steve
Megalou
Grahamiam
Offa
Randy
JonathanValjean
a space oddity
Akots
solenoozerec
Doc Tsiolkovski

It would be easy to go on and on! There are so many good players and good posters. Heck, I didn't even get to Denyd, Darkness, Dianthus, dvandenberg, Roland Ehnstrom, smackster, klarius, zamint3, MiniMe, chunkymonkey, A'abarachamadan (sp?), gozpel, Tomoyo, ...
Oh for pete sake, there I go again. I wish I had never seen this thread and am now going back to play CoTM7.

Aeson
Chieftess
Tomoyo
Alan H
Aaglo
Onedreamer
Daufoi
Fourth_Wise_Man
Perfection
Stratego
Mathilda
Doc T
TF
Padma
LL Xerxes
Yamamoto
LouLong

Some of these are those I'm currently playing PBEM with. I probably won't be on anyone's list, since I'm not fameous or something like that.

I think it's fairly natural that there's overlap. For one thing, 20 is a long list (and some are much longer) and there are plenty of people each doing this. Aside from great well-known players, there are simple many omnipresents that are likely to spring to the mind of many posters, particularly new ones. And there's obviously plenty of overlap for SG players, as well as PBEMers and GOTMers, etc.

There's plenty of names that are coming up all over the thread (most of them certainly more deserving than mine). I just thought it was odd.
