Sometimes you mihgt have a tiny city, and want to make a note of its' use.

i.e.

Port-
Fill in- (this was used during a succession game by sulla a year ago :) the town was Atsu)
Outpost

Or, any other name for just filling in a small area.

my forbidden palace gets renamed 'capitol city 2' and thats about it. but i might temporailly rename a cty to a wonder that will become available soon sothat i dont forget to start it.

I will rename a city if its name sounds stupid like New New *. This rarely happens to me because I usually play on standard size maps.;)

sometimes, not always

i always rename cities once they reach the "new" cities and the "2". i name them after my leader like alexander did with al those alexandrias.

i name them things like Ragnaria and Elizbotine :p :)

most times I leave them alone, and RARELY go past new _____ as a matter of fact, the first time i ever went beyond that was my first game when i had a huge pangea with 1 other civ and got up to New ______ 4... i don't remember what civ I was... it was probably zulu or babylon... i didnt know the differences between the civs, so i didnt really care who i was, and put it on random...

ended up getting a cultural victory (imagine that... having at least 150 cities and then FINALLY getting a cultural victory)

now, i find it totally pointless and time consuming to expand that much... so, i expand enough to get everything i need or until room runs out, whichever comes first, then start killing anyone who gets in my way

Most times, I'll rename a captured city, only to tell me that it's a foreign city (say, if i took washington, i'd rename it "Washington (American)" just so i know...

my brother, however always numbers his cities... in the order they were made... "001" anywhere up to "512"

I've yet to SEE him capture any cities, so I don't know if he leaves those alone, or what...

Once I get to the "New" stage I start renaming cities. Otherwise, when the .05 microsecond flash announcement of "pollution near Arglebargle" goes by I have to waste time looking at Arglebargle, New Arglebargle, Arglebargle 2, New Arglebargle 2, etc. to see which one has pollution. So New Arglebargle gets renamed as soon as it's settled.

On a similar note, I never play the Aztecs because I can't keep their city names straight.

BTW, my first rename is always Arglebargle. I like the name.

I like this theory of yours, YNCS...

Though I may have to change it from Arglebargle to something else... say... Swishyswashy... Dingledangle... Lamanamanumi... or the oh so famous Ramalamadingdong

As others have mentioned one major problem is to remember which city is where in a particular game. My strategy is to lump cities into groups by renaming them with a theme. For example, I might have some spices in one part of my empire and the cities near them would be named like "Cinnamon", "Saffron", "Pepper", etc.

If I feel lazy I will just have "Region A" with all its city names starting with "A" etc. :)

Sometimes, I give special names. Actually, I'm bored of it because I tend to use the same names in every game. So I alwasy end up w/ "Grillopolis" and such... :mischief:
But this thread has been inspiring:
"Arglebargle" by YNCS, Crowpocalyptic1's "Lamanamanumi" are nice, jack merchant's "New Blabla", CT's "Fill In" seem to be somewhat nihilistic, but have a certain congeniality. :goodjob::lol:

I think I will start a new game tomorrow and rename my capital Ramalamadingdong.

After reading this thread, I will now try to rename more of my cities with crazy names.

BTW, where is Aseon and Orangsodia?

When I make a landing on another continent, I will rename the first city; whether I build it or conquer it. This is where I will rush an airport, walls and such and will from time to time, let the enemy mount an assault and (hopefully) lose quite a few units. I usually name it something like Egypt Falls. I do this so I can find it easily.

Sometimes, I'll found random sucky cities on a 3 square island and give them interesting names. Mostly, I leave normal names, mainly because I'm used to Utica being my science capital and goin' to Theveste when I need something built fast.

I usually name my capital Ljouwert, which is the Frisian name for the capital of Friesland in the North of the Netherlands. I think you can guess the pattern...

When the AI captures one of my cities, the military advisor may say something like "Tytsjerksteradiel was captured by the evil French" which is funny even when it isn't.

Making up my own names can be *very* time-consuming, but it is rewarding to read "Our workers have completed a road to bring wines into Ivory Tower" or "Warriorburg has produced spearman".

I believe Thunderfall is also a fan of customizing the game in this way, according to screenshots like www.civfanatics.com/civ3images/gallery1/screenshot73.shtml.

I normally name my first city with a name beginning with A, 2nd with B etc etc, in one game I was so lazy they were just called A,B,C etc etc
