I selected a ship which I wanted to move into unexplored territory. I selected 'GO TO' via hotkey (the letter 'G') and then selected a spot on the minimap instead of scrolling forever on the main map to select the destination.
The game crashed to desktop, rebooted, and Windows came back up with the "WINDOWS HAS RECOVERED FROM A SERIOUS ERROR" message.
