Navy on tiny lakes

Hi all,

I've been playing the Britannia scenario a few times now (my thanks to Vadus for making a great scenario and for making me realize I need some computer upgrades :( ) But as i was playing the game on the bancs of the river Rhine, I was aiming for a fully connected river through strategically placed cities. The map in this scenario makes this possible. (see picture)

BUT, i noticed is wasn't allowed to buid galleys and such in my cities connected to these small 'inner seas' (i'm sorry i didn't know what else to call them).

Does anybody know how to deal with this? Is there some line in a script which controls when a city is allowed to build naval units?, linked to the size of the lake or does the lake need at least a single tile of 'deep ocean' or something like that?

(or am i doing something wrong  )

.. i believe the game was originally scripted to leave out this possibility see also the funny screenshots thread within the bug reports

But i'd still like to have this option for the game,

Does anybody agree?
or am i just blabbering:twitch:

If its true that this is not possible then its a bit of a step backwards. in previous civs it was very useful to be able to deploy say an aircraft carrier into small locked in areas of water in order to increase your air range.

I know in Civ 3 you couldn't build ships in cities that weren't connected to either an ocean or a sea (basically a body of water made up of 21 tiles or more).

It may be similar in Civ 4.

So, you're saying that this is a problem because now you can't build aircraft carriers in extremely small landlocked lakes? That seems like a step backwards for the game to you? I find the idea of modern naval warships being built in land locked small sea areas to be ridiculous. I know the game isn't supposed to be "real" in the sense that some things function unrealistically in the interest of game mechanics, but aircraft cariers and battleships in small landlocked lakes is a bit too much of a departure from reality for my tastes.

I don't think its ridiculous at all. Just because people don't in real life doesn't mean I shouldn't be givn the choice. If another civ is on one side and you on the other does it not make sense that one or both of us might attempt an amphibious invasion.

You could edit the map just a wee bit to get what you want. Change those strings of rivers into very long one-square-wide stretches of shallow sea, and you can run battleships right up to Paris.
