Ok, I have fixed all my problems up until now and I can't get ahold of technical support to help me further.

The game loads fine, I can even start playing the game a little bit. HOWEVER, once I select something to build (like military or scouts or whatever) the game quits completely, back to desktop. It has happened several, several times.

Are there any solutions to this problem? My anti-viruses/firewalls are off, no other programs running, the game runs fine until I try to add something on to my new little settlement. Very frustrating, need help!

I also have the latest drivers for my video card (Radeon 9600) and for my sound card as well (SB Live!). Not getting any error messages, just crashes to desktop.

Few basics first

Apply the Firaxis Patch 1.09
Swap file - set to 2000mb, min=max
If Bios more than 3 years old (2 years to be safe) get a Bios upgrade
Try an older set of drivers for the graphics card (Beta test software will have been frozen a few months ago, quite a few have reported success using older drivers - thats because the newer ones are defacto less stable and not tested in Civ IV Beta run)

Any other symptoms of any nature, anything that seemed strange however trivial. Particularly if in late game, slow game play, slow turns, increased CTDs as game progresses

Go thro the above, then if still issues, post your Dxdiag dump using the 'advance' button below, then we can go further if needed

Sorry thats like a foreign language to me. My virtual memory is set to 2000 min/max I deciphered that much from what you said... as far as my bios I'll need more explanation if you would be so kind.

I have run the patch and I'll try the driver suggestion, even though I was previously running an older driver without success as well. Thanks for the tips and please try to get back to me.

Last night Patch V1.52 was released, it seems to have addressed most if not all - wait for more feedback, but looking good so far - of the major issues, including yours. Details on the Forums Civ IV Home page of this Site. The Patch will negate all I have said above, and address your current problem re terminology, just download Patch V1.52 via your game interface.

Some still cant get at that update option before a crash - for those mirror sites will assist, keep an eye on the above page for more information.

post a dxdiag file please.

sure

Press the windows 'start' button, and select 'run'.
In the box that appears, type "dxdiag" (without the quotes) and hit the enter key.
Follow the on-screen instructions, until you get the main DirectX Diagnostic program.
Hit the "save all information" button (as shown in the graphic below). You will be prompted for a file name and can save the information as a text file.
Either upload the text file as an attachment to you post, or open it and copy and paste the data into your post.

I can help you with posting your DXDiag.
(It's pretty easy) :)

Okay, here's what you do:
Press your start tab (Usually bottom left corner of your desktop).
One your start button is selected, you'll see your list of Programs/documents/settings/search/help/run etc...
*Select Run...
In the box that pops up, type "dxdiag". Press ok to start.

The DXDiagnostic Tool will start working. Allow the program to finish (bar may be on bottom left). It is pretty quick, should take under a minute at most.
Once it has finished, select Save All Information... (bottom right hand side).
Usually, you'll save it to desktop, or into whatever folder you have handy for PC information. (It is a text file, so you can read it with notepad if you are curious)

You can attach files to your posts here, so if you want to provide your DXdiag then choose that option below your forum reply main window. (Below these smileys I see below this sentence).
There will be a "Manage Attachements" tab, press that, upload your DXDiag, and you are set!
Another choice is to copy and paste all info from your DXdiag onto your reply to this post. Whatever works for you.
Now people will be able to look at your drivers etc, and see if you need upgrades or something else.

Good luck! I hope you get your game working for you.

EDIT: Ack! Some good Samaratin beat me to it! lol.

Wow, dxdiag says luwkwul has 1.5Gb RAM, 256Mb video memory. I can't believe this machine could have problems running Civ4. This doesn't just meet the recommended h/w spec, it eats it for breakfast.

Hi Luwkwul,

I am having some problems identifying your computer.

Is this a home made computer?

If so what is the make and model # of your motherboard?

If not, what is the make and model of computer?

I am confused to some of things it says it the diag.

Thanks

Yeah I made my computer on ibuypower.com. I run much more demanding games obviously, I'm just having a very weird problem with Civ 4. My mother board is, bare with me here, ASUS - p4c800/p4p800 series, Intel 875/865 Chipset Series Support CD Rev.52.11. Thats basically what I can make from the installation cd.

So... I can select settlers and it will continue just fine. But when I select worker or warrior to build it goes back to desktop, which is my problem. I am really confused.

ok your chipset drivers are not loaded right.

Go to the mfg of the boards site (asus)and download chipset drivers for the board.

Ok here is my new dxdiag dump... and my computer is running slower after I tried to install some new drivers for my motherboard. The game has the same problem btw, with the drivers I've installed.

luk you say your antivirus is off but you still have 324mb on page file.

What anti virus do you have?

BTW If it is norton, it wont turn off by closeing it.

You have to disable it thru msconfig.

start/run

type in: msconfig

Under startup tab disable all.

Under services check the box marked hide all ms services. Make sure you check that box first or bad things could happen. After you have verified that ms services are hidden disable the rest.

Try that. Norton can crush 3d games and thats the only way to get it to stop all the way.

Don't have norton... I had symantec and I just uninstalled it to see if that was the problem. Still having the same thing happen to me. I don't understand why any of this would be related to selecting warrior or worker. Like it's fine if I hit settlers lol, what is happening!?
