Need help streaming to Twitch - much appreciated

what i want to do:

- live stream video and mic audio of my civ 5 bnw game to my twitch channel
- open the chat function on my ipad/ipod so i can chat while i play

what i have:

- 1x macbook pro
- 1x ipad air 2
- 1x ipod touch

- twitch channel
- twitch app installed on ipad
- obs, with settings tweaked from this tutorial

what happens

- the stream seems to be really bad in terms of buffering. The bitrate was reduced but still its struggling
- the twitch app on ipad lets me chat but doesn't seem to load the stream at all (i don't actually want to watch myself, so maybe this is not so important, but it might be useful for diagnostics purposes)
