I am playing at Monarchy level. I am a Despotism and have been rushing production without mercy. have a City with three people in it. I have two luxuries that should be producing 2 happy faces. I have one soldier and one temple that should produce a total of two content faces. Now, I know I will have a lot of unhappiness (83% rushing/16% crowded) but the math makes absolutely no sense to me at all, which is making it impossible for me to plan.

For example: If i use NO entertainers, i.e. I use all three population, I get 1 content person and 2 unhappy people. Huh?! I mean, even if all three people were unhappy, the solider and the temple should make two of them content, right? and then the two luxuries would make those two happy. So I SHOULD have two happy, and one unhappy person?

Please help me figure this out so I can plan my games accordingly. Right now I am very frustrated. Thanks a lot for any guidance you can provide!

Your right, something doesn't add up! "2 luxuries that should be producing 2 happy faces" are they? Do they show up in the city display. Really need to post a save to understand it further.

You have six unhappy faces, 1 from crowding (having three people when only two are content on Monarch) and 5 from pop-rushing (83% is [roughly] 5 times the 16% who are unhappy from crowding). Your luxuries take care of two unhappy faces, the temple and MP take care of two more. This leaves you with two faces that are still unhappy.

The trick about all of this is that you can have more unhappy faces than you have people.

OH! You can really have more unhappy faces than people?! That is the about the only thing that makes sense. Are you sure though? Wow, I wish they would have said that somewhere (or did they and I miss that?). How can I plan for that? Is there something that can help me figure out how badly a city will be then?

Yes, I'm sure you can have more unhappy faces than you have people.

I don't know that it was in the manual anywhere, and it certainly isn't intuitive, but that is how it works. You need to count up your unhappy faces - so many for the size of the city, so many for pop-rushing (1 for each pop rushed for 10 turns, or something like that - I don't really pop-rush), so many for war weariness, so many for drafting (same as pop-rushing, I think). Pop rushing is what is causing your problems, as Spoonwood said. It is causing a lot of unhappiness that lasts for a long time.

you definitely have 5 unhappiness points from pop-rushing. it will go away by one per 20 turns and be gone in 100 turns if you stop tormenting these guys. it's tough having more pop-rush unhappingess than you have luxuries to counteract it. it pretty much will force you to use such a city as a worker pump for quite a few turns.

again, posting a save will be the best option since bananas.
