Need Help!!!

I am trying to be the first one to reserch philosophy but I think I am getting beat to it every time some how becasue its not giving me the free advance. I am only playing on Warlord and I am trying to do a Sci/Broker type game.

I am not sure if I am doing everything I can to research the techs correctly. I have my sci slider at 80% and I am building citys as fast as I can and exploring with the warriors. I am using Greece as my civ but I seem to be coming up short every time somehow when gunning for the free tech.

Is there some way to rush tech advances?

BTW I am using CIV3 Gold edition

If you're using Gold (Vanilla and Play the World) you'll never get a free tech from Philo. That's only available in Conquets/Complete.

Ok If I go to the store to buy it would civ4 be a better purchase? I mean I am really just learning what the heck to do with civ3

I can almost guarantee that if you ask "is Civ 4 a better purchase?" in the Civ 3 forum, you'll probably get No for an answer. I don't know where you'd get Conquests as a standalone, but the Complete (Van/PTW/C3C) set isn't all that expensive.

You could probably pick up Conquests from Ebay or Amazon. If you do decide to plunk down the $20 for Complete, make sure you uninstall Gold first. They will conflict with each other.

I went out and just bought Complete ($20) and I really like it alot more than gold.
