So I've played Civ2 for the better part of my high school life, and I only recently realized that Civ III and IV were award winning variations on a same great theme.
The problem is, while I beat people on Emperor and Deity in II no problem, here, I've had to restart 4-5 times already with Monarch difficulty.
Here is my story.
I used the great Carthage, went for GL early and Sun Tzu, expecting a tough contest. Before the Middle Ages, I realized that my neighbor Japan was probably the strongest opponent, and controlled technology and the only source of iron and horses on the continent.
Anyway, so I fought off the Portuguese and Persians from my own half, and then I waited for war between the French and the Japanese to break out around 1300-ish. This was after I started a long bloody war with them, wasting countless armored and mechanized units in a struggle that yielded maybe 1 or 2 cities a turn on the offensive. When the French nuked all the remaining Japanese cities, however, I quickly ran through and conquered most of them.
I went on to wage war against the Portuguese after developing several armies with Pentagon and Heroic Epic and all that goodness, mixing variations of 4 move-per-turn armored armies and 3 move-per-turn mechanized/combined arms armies, supported by a large cast of bombers and radar artillery.
After I finished off the Portuguese, I immediately turned west and ROP-raped the Arabs, who were already suffering from the effects of no SDI and no rubber source. I glassed whatever cities they didn't have, and used the armies to great effect against individual veteran TOW and mechanized infantry.
The year is now in the early 1900's about 100+ turns left, and I need a domination (66/66) victory, or conquest, or pray that the runaway French, who have in these couple hundred turns, conquered not only the Spanish, but the Zulus, the Dutch, and a whole bunch of others. This is on a huge map, with 16 civilizations, so you'd figure Joan of Arc's come a long way since the Hundred Year's War and cavalry/infantry sieges of the English. Currently, the French fascist state is completely stomping the Sumerians, nuking their cities (despite SDI) every turn, a couple of times. Sometimes my PC would freeze from the whoosh of all the ICBMs being launched. A scary thought of war as I look at the Sumerian state, and see that despite their impressive victory against the Chinese, Hittites, and a host of smaller states, they're on the way out, the power bar having inevitably shifted against them.
Here's what I plan on doing...
1. ROP rape the Indians, who have an island continent all of their own. I have over 800 units, most of them armor/mech and stealth bombers, awaiting a renewal of a ROP agreement. I have located their SDI city, Boston (I know right?), and plan on taking that in the first turn of war, and then quickly moving throughout the countryside, scattering it with groups of 4 MA 2 MI, and 1 Army/1 RA (Rocket artillery). Meanwhile, I need to nuke some of their cities too, and get rid of a lot of the baggage they have. I plan on using the workers I capture to immediately convert the pollution and logistical problems into an advantage, as I set up a system of interior lines wherever the terrain suits me, and then mass airlift the remainder of my all-vet/elite ground army and my 100+ stealth bombers. From there, the war becomes simple. Use a few Marines to capture rogue island cities, and use my 20+ battleship fleet to interdict their naval forces from intercepting my floating island of transports.
2. Fix corruption in Portuguese and Arab continents. Growth is high, but the problem is that for every 1 shield I produce, 9 goes to waste. I have yet to find a strategy, but I figure I will force labor it when I need to to get courthouse and police station. Garrison size, of course, is a full 4 for my fascist government. I'm open to a better way of solving this endemic corruption/waste problem. It's hamstringing my growth/production.
3. Develop end-game strategy to reach within 100 turns, either turn on the Sumerians, or wage war against a decrepit Iroquois state, or war against the French juggernaut herself.
I would greatly appreciate any insight, constructive, destructive, whatnot
