Seems a stupid question, but I cannot find anywhere on the forums, and the game itself, well, doesn't give too much information about how it works!!!

How does flanking work during combat?

I didn't even know there was such a thing!

Is there some thread on these forums, which a detailed description of mechanics and combat?

It has taken me several weeks to notice there is a flanking bonus, and civilopedia was/is not useful.

But flanking is a stacking bonus of 10% for melee units, when the enemy you are attacking has adjecent non-ranged friendly units.

Examples:
Ranged units do not recieve a flanking bonus when attacking, and do not provide the bonus for your melee attacking unit.
When you attack a barbarian, units from other civs also count as flanking.

But I don't know a article for a complete description

Combat 101:

- each unit has a combat strength.
- ranged units have a combat strength AND a ranged combat strength
- depending on the type of the attack (melee/ranged) the same values are used both for attacker and defender (eg. an archer defending from a ranged attack from another archer will use it's ranged combat strength to defend. for melee units ranged=melee strength)
- units have 10 hit points. for each 2 hit points lost, the unit will fight 5% less effectively. Bushido (Japan trait) units fight at full strength always)
- flanking bonuses apply when attacking a unit surrounded by your own or your allies' units. these are 10% per unit, up to a maximum of 50% (6 hexes surrounding the unit - the attacking unit does NOT count for flanking bonus)

anything else?

Just so you know, there's an article on this topic on the War Academy that is in production, so that information will be easier to find in the future. :)
