I know the right answer is "read all the documentation" if you want to know about religion.
But my goal is to know as little as possible. I just want to play the game without going for religion. I picked Kongo because from is description they didn't care. But now England has found my continent, and is flooding my continent with little book carriers. I can't even attack them. By the way, all my cities are now England's religion!

For some reason, the game has given me 4 Apostles. I never made them, and don't know where they came from. I selected them to "eliminate religion" (the second choice upon promotion). Can I use them to fight their Apostles?

Also, as long as I have them, what's the best use of them? As you can see I am a noob. Is it possible to play the game with minimal (no) impact -from religion in- the game [-edited-]? If so, I am willing to restart.

Why can't you kill them?

Hello Tim, and welcome to Civfanatics!

Sorry to state the obvious, but you might need to read a little during the game to grasp how stuff works. Just open the in-game Civilopedia and type:

-"Apostles". (Religious unit)
-"Religious Convert" (Kongo's leader unique ability).

Regarding your questions:

Can I use them to fight their Apostles?
Yes. Apostles can attack any religious unit: Missionaries, Apostles, Inquisitors.

Also, as long as I have them, what's the best use of them?
First, promote them. Depending on their promotion and your goals: Converting other cities, atacking other units or creating relics.

Is it possible to play the game with minimal (no) impact fro the game?

I guess you mean the Religious game?
Short answer: No
Long answer: Not really. Closest you'll get is by disabling the Religious victory (Advanced settings, when creating a game) and choosing a Civ that has no religious "stuff" (your choice was bad).

Four things:

1. If you generate an apostle in a city with religion A, the apostle will also have religion A. In Kongo's case, taht should be obvious, since they can't even found their own religion, but it is true even if you have founded religion B.

2. Religious units who have the same religion cannot fight each other. So, if England has converted your cities to their religion, any apostles you generate will have England's religion. Same goes if you burn an apostle to start an inquisition -- any inquisitors you buy in a city with religion A will be religion A inquisitors.

3. You got 4 apostles because you built 4 Theater Districts or Mbanzas in your cities that have a religion -- that's part of Kongo's unique ability.

4. If you are uninterested in the religion part of the game, why did you care whether England spread their religion to you? As it happens, that is beneficial to you (you get their founder belief and any other beliefs that don't require a holy site), so what's the problem?

If England's religious units are getting in your way, your option is basically to declare war..military units roll over religious ones.

Otherwise, hopefully they will stop missionizing you once all your cities are converted.
