i have a pretty old computer with average ram and a crappy video card. i can still run civ 4. but around halfway through the game it starts getting really laggy and slows down. other than the video options is there other ways to improve performance, i dont care much about the graphics

already tried it doesnt make a difference. is there settings somewhere else that i can mess around with or a program that improves performance

Try lowering the graphics settings. Try downloading this software.

Other than that the only thing I can say is that you need a new comp

Also, how laggy does it become? Lag is pretty much expected and natural in Civ. But there's a difference between a 30 sec lag (like the GEM map with some scenario filling it with civs) to a few, but nonetheless somewhat annoying, extra seconds.

um when i tell a unit to move it takes them about a sec to. and i takes longer to open cities and do attacks. idk it could be normal i guess i know that civ4 is a very laggy game but i was hoping there was a way to reduce it.

Your computer is pretty much the same as my old computer which I gave up trying to play Civ 4 on as it was so painfully slow. I'm afraid that there is little to do to speed it up. You can try removing the check next to show friendly moves and show enemy moves, but that means that you don't see what the other Civs are doing, just the end result. Single unit graphic will help as will turning all graphic settings to minimum, but you have probably done that already. You may find it easier running in Windowed rather than full screen mode, particularly if you want to switch between applications, you'll have to see whether it helps in your case though.
