sorry for the newbie question, but i was wondering if i need to build roads to connect tile improvements like farms, cottages, etc. to my city? i ask this because i know that in order to take advantage of resources like marble, copper, horses, etc., you have to build mines and pasteurs and then connect them to your city via roads. does this same principle apply to cottages, farms, etc.? many thanks in advance.

thanks ggganz. i was also wondering when you build cottages, how can you further improve on them in order to rake in even more gold/commerce.

pugua i thing a road provides extra commerce to that square that has a cottage or farm at least thats how it worked in civ 3 and i bet it works that way in civ4. In a normal game if the cottage is worked it will grow to a hamlet in 10 turns, then it will grow to a village in 20, finaly to a town in 40, if you ever need more money build like 5-10 of them and by the time your done building the first 1s will already be expanding.

Roads:
-DO hook up resources to city, and empire if connected to capital
-DON'T provide any extra benefit on tile
-DO double movement speed on tile
-DO require The Wheel

Railroads:
-DO hook up resources to city, and empire if connected to capital
-DO provide +1 production if on Mine or Workshop tile
-DON'T provide any extra benefit on tile besides above point
-DO quadruple (??) movement speed on tile
-DO require Railroad and Coal

Allow me to fix this, if you would-

Roads:
-DO hook up resources to city, and empire if connected to capital
-DON'T provide any extra benefit on tile
-DO reduce movement costs from one road to another to 1/2 MP (1/3 if you have Engineering)
-DO require The Wheel

Railroads:
-DO hook up resources to city, and empire if connected to capital
-DO provide +1 production if on Mine, Lumbermill, or Quarry tile
-DON'T provide any extra benefit on tile besides above point
-DO reduce movement costs from one rail to another to 1/10 of its move allowance (note this is different from road movement)
-DO require Railroad tech and Coal resource
