I don't know if this has been done before but I thought what if we all report on the behavior of neighboring civs after each game in order to determine patterns. For example in my current game (I am India);

Japan - moved troops thru to fight the Zulus, declared war on me when I asked them to get out, wouldn't surrender when I pommeled them off of the continent. Stayed furious all game.

Zulus- surprisingly nice. Have never incurred into my territory despite a huge undefended border. Have never asked for tribute. Later in game I took them under my wing as tech sponsor.

China - would have fought me if I wasn't so damn tough. They tried to send a column of workers thru my territory but I evicted them and made an all-elephant border gaurd. They asked for tribute early but have been kissing up ever since.

France - that oh so pretty lady on a far continent has, as usual, been nothing but gracious. I will love her even after her hair falls out...

Russia - rude early but far away so I have them friendly by presents.

I don't think this has been done before (not exactly, like this anyways). There was a poll about who the biggest, backstabbing civ was, with Germany and the Zulu having a commanding lead, if I remember correctly.

So much of what the AI behavior is will vary greatly from game to game, that I can't really see any pattern developing. From what I have seen, AI attitudes toward the player depends on:
1. Culture group. Americans, Aztecs, and Iroquis are in the American culture group and act a little better towards each other than a civ from an Asian or European culture group.
2. Territory and resources. If you are in the AI's way of expansion, or have a resource they don't have, they are tempted to try and take it from you. It could even be resources that you don't have the tech for yet (the AI knows where all the resources are).
3. Reputation. If you break treaties, or are strong allies/friends with their enemy, they won't like you. How often you trade with the AI will also affect their attitude towards you.
4. Military strength, and/or Power Ranking. If you are too weak, or too strong, civs will have a reason to hate you, and want to start a war.

Also, alot will depend on what terrain the AI starts on that determines what they do, and who ends up being the powerhouse civs, and who gets certain wonders.
