Netscape 8.0= IE+Firefox

Interesting idea combining the rendering engines.

I'll stick with Firefox though. Anyone who doesn't make their site compliant with Firefox isn't smart enough to be important enough to make a worthwhile site ;).

Fixed for you.

OK, I tried it...
It's pretty good, alot like Firfox.
Instead of a Google toolbox, there's a netscape search toolboxy thing
They have little bars at the top. One with weather, one with news, one with shopping, blahblahblah. The bar changer is to choose which set you want. One is all news, one is all local stuff, like weather, ect ect.
Tabbed browsing :D
Skin isn't all that great. As ugly as the Firefox skin is, I think this is worse, but don't judge a book browser by it's cover skin.
They had other features I would have been able to find, but then it crashed.

Very few websites are compatable with W3C standards, and many that are not compliant work on Firefox. Many large-scale, important websites are not compliant, like the CFC homepage.

I wish all websites were compatale with W3C standards though.

How about speed? Does it load the pages quick enough? One of my main gripes with firefox is that it loads pages slower than IE/Avant does.

This looks interesting, I'm thinking of giving it a go here at work.

I never noticed a page load time with Firefox. Maybe I just have a really good connection. :)

I also tried NS8 last night. Looks nice. When it's maximized, the scrollbar doesn't scroll when you click on the right-most edge of the window, like Internet Explorer (and NS4.8 and below) do. (NS6 and 7 did that (scrolled) -- found it annoying). Nice customized window, too.

1.5mbps at work, and Firefox loads slower than IE. Haven't tried it at home where I have 6mbps.

About Firefox loading pages slower than other browsers: lately, I've been using Opera more and more often, because it loads pages faster than Firefox on the school network's connection (which is so lousy it makes dial-up look good).

As for the Netscape based on Firefox, I haven't had an opportunity to try it out, but I did notice this:
Compare this statement in the Mozilla License:
3.2. Availability of Source Code.

Any Modification which You create or to which You contribute must be made available in Source Code form under the terms of this License either on the same media as an Executable version or via an accepted Electronic Distribution Mechanism to anyone to whom you made an Executable version available; and if made available via Electronic Distribution Mechanism, must remain available for at least twelve (12) months after the date it initially became available, or at least six (6) months after a subsequent version of that particular Modification has been made available to such recipients. You are responsible for ensuring that the Source Code version remains available even if the Electronic Distribution Mechanism is maintained by a third party.
with this from the Netscape License:
3. RESTRICTIONS. Except as otherwise expressly permitted in this Agreement, you may not: (i) modify or create any derivative works of the Beta Browser or documentation, including customization, translation or localization; (ii) decompile, disassemble, reverse engineer, or otherwise attempt to derive the source code of the Beta Browser,

Somewhat contradictory, isn't it? The license on Mozilla, which the new Netscape version is based on (the Mozilla license applies to Firefox as well as Mozilla suite), demands that any changes to the source code be released in source code form. But, Netscape's license says that the source code will not be released, and any effort to find out what it is is against the license.

And don't get me started on the theme on Netscape... Someone at Netscape is colorblind...

well netscape is company, not foundation; and not bound to mozilla license. also netscape uses IE engine as well- implementation of that is enough reason to keep source code locked. It is based on firefox.

What does Netscape being owned by a corporation have to do with whether they follow the license of the source code that they used?

I understand that they would keep the source code to the IE engine locked, since Microsoft's license would require that anyway, but the source code of the parts based on Firefox should, according to the Mozilla license, be released.

Have you ever seen netscape release their source code? They do support open source financially, but they are an AOL company.

Actually, I have. That's where Mozilla came from to begin with. But, their previous versions weren't based directly on Mozilla code. And it still doesn't matter that they are owned by AOL: if they use Mozilla code, then they should obey the Mozilla license regarding that code.

There is a Firefox plug-in that I use that allows me to right click on a page and select view in IE. When I use IE I can right click on a page and select view in Firefox. Thats good enough for me so I will decline the AOL browser.

I've downloaded it yesterday and I think it's preety nice, although I will probably not switch to it yet from firefox because it has a longer loading time on my computer and the speed is very important to me. It has many nice additions which I like. For example I like the option that I can import everything (except skins) from firefox, I can easily switch to IE engine and I also like the pop-up blocker, which is in my oppinion better then everything available to date. I will keep track of this project because I think it has the potential to go big ...
