Never seen such a horrible multiplayer service

Hello,

I have played frustrating multiplayer games from paradox interactive like hearts of iron 3, europa universalis, victoria, etc. I have never found a game so mindnumbingly painful to play in multiplayer as civilization 5 gods and kings.

It takes forever for people to get a game actually launched because people have trouble seeing one another in lobby, or can't join at all. This makes no sense when all the applicable ports are forwarded. Each player has a good computer and stable connection (known from playing hours of other multiplayer games with them), but for whatever reason, civilization 5 is quite possibly the most pathetic service i've ever seen. we all enjoyed playing the game in single player, but find if we want to play multiplayer civilization we have to go back to civ 4 if we don't want to spend unreasonable amounts of time getting started.

Use Steam, the system was designed to use Steam.

Shift+Tab while in game, right click your friend's name, and choose Invite to Game.

If you are playing with strangers I cannot help you. I would never want to play multiplayer civ with complete strangers anyway, so I don't blame Firaxis for that part of the crappy multiplayer.

As for PI games, they aren't truly designed for multiplayer either. There are lulls and sections of intense micro (wars). This means different players want to play at different speeds. Try and find a few friends to play with you, that way you can still chat and enjoy each other's company when one of your friends is embroiled in a huge war. And its much easier to get a game set up with friends, as direct IPs should work just fine.

Yes Civ5 has poor MP code right now, but it is not really steam's fault as steam powers other games and they work fine, so it is likely that it is the core MP code in Civ5 that is the problem.

As to finding people to play, the games list is regional and thus hard to find international players. Come to a steam chat like offered at Civplayers leagues and we get around the issues of the build in games list by using Steam friends and having an open to all steam group chat room.

The links are in my sig

Why is the steam group in chinese? At least I am seeing it in chinese... am I doing something wrong?

Agreed with the OP. Civ 5 has bad multiplayer (or it could be a lot better, I still find it fun), which is a damn shame.
