New civ idea

I have an idea for a new civ, based on the inhabitants of the south sea islands. They could be named The Polynesians and be Expansionist/Religious or something. Their starting techs: Pottery and Ceremonial Burial. UU: a galley that can end its turn on any water square, giving the possibility to cross oceans right from the start.

Now I'm not very familiar with the original population of this part of the world, but maybe someone here does? Of course, the realization of this idea would call for someone who can actually create a civ, because I sure can't...

Woah. Jinx...buy me a coke, Rammstein. Great post! I thought of this *exact* idea last night. Polynesians would definitely give a 'different flavor' to the civ options. I was also thinking of a 'super galley' to use as the Polynesian UU. Either 1 bonus movement point or the ability to safely travel in sea squares. I think giving them the ability to move safely in ocean squares is far too powerful. It could break the game even. Maybe religious/industrious? The people who made the Easter Island statues definitely had to have some level of an 'industrious' characteristic.

Hehehe, I don't think you and I are alone on this one. Maybe an idea for Civ4?

Anyway, sea crossing galleys aren't that powerful, really. And they did cross vast ocean distances to settle around the islands.

It'd be great if they had the ability to link small islands.
I hate playing island maps (archipellago), since the distances between cities become larger (thus higher corruption) and the effects of certain wonders I'm attached to are pretty much nullified (all cities on same continent...)

Phoenicians

I would think about the phoenicians too.
They were a very powerful commercial civ around 3000 BC, as they were the ones who established the cities of Cartage, Byblos and Antioch and Tyre (actually under the Persian civ), etc. etc.
They were pretty religious civ too.

Their UU might be a galley that has higher capacity, or higher speed (although that was a Viking specialty with their Drakkar)

Incas

The incas also should be added as they dominated Latin America for ages before they were beaten by the Spanish.
Also, they were pretty much Religious.

They were also Industrious civ, as they were expert in Masonry, due to their respect for the stone, and for their perfect communication network between the different cities.

Their UU can be the Inca Warrior. But i wouldn't know which specs to giv him provided the Aztec Jaguar Warrior is already present (may be a 2.1.1. spec?)

Crossin ocean squares would mean overpowering. =/

I think the Phoenicians are already represented by both Persia and Carthage, correct me if I'm wrong, heh.

The Inca's would be very interesting to play... Only their UU is already taken >=/

The Phoenicians are also a barbarian tribe.

Until some of the more important civs of the world have been included, I'd put all ideas for all the smaller civs of the world on ice, personally, because "it aint gonna happen", as they say.

I'd think the Mayas are a good choice as well.

Necron, the Phoenicians have nothing to do with the Persians. If anything, the Persians conquered the Phoenician cities and ruled over them. ;)

I think you're overstressing their importance really. The area of influence they held sway over was fairly remote; they were essentially confined to The South American Andes region.

If you're thinking of a need for more cultural balance, btw, then you need to look at African civilisations first, really. Having The Zulu as the only African civ is pretty pathetic, really, when you consider Ethiopia, etc.

As far as a dumb civilization is concerned. Most of the American Indian ones IMHO are dumb. At least as far as the Iroquios are concerned I am sure there are better tribes out there to choose from that were far more significant. Unless it is used as a broad generaliztion of the first people in North America.

Weird. I thought this was MY idea...! The best bit is that we've got the Liliuokailani animated leaderhead to go with it :)

So true. Ethiopia would be good. Maybe the African Elephant as a UU.

South America should be represented (Incas, Tupi,...)
As North Africa (Mali, Ethiopia,...)
Pacific too (Polynesian, Papuians - from Papua,...)
As world-dominator CIVs (portuguese,dutch,...)
Religions probably (Jews-Israel,...)

That as been discussed before and there is a pool on this.
Go there!
(Portugal is reaching second place :D )
