New Conquest: Middle East in the Reign of Heraclius

I'd test it our for you, but you misspelled Roman. It's actually spelled B-Y-Z-A-N-T-I-N-E :p

:p

Seriously, tho, I am very interested in a scenario from this specific era. I've DLed the files and will get the ball rolling on testing tomorrow, hopefully. In any event, I'll give you an AAR on the action after playing with it for awhile.

Thanks :goodjob:

The scenario badly needs testing for gameplay, and any possible crashes that just didn't show up when I did my one half test game. I hope you don't have that problem with the Swordsman/Armenian.

(Interestingly, another scenario I am making crashed halfway through because of the swordsman-proper. It turned out, there was an Swordsman folder and an INI file in the PTW directory for the swordsman, which was looking for SwordmanFortify .wav (note space)! I fixed that, but I've no idea if this was a bug in PTW or if I was fiddling around with it a long time ago).

well Calgacus, technically, Metalhead is right- it is in the reign of Heraclius that the switch from eastern Roman to Byzantien empire is official

at least in the eyes of historians

No he isn't Xen...I'm sadly surprised to hear you say this. There's never a switch to "Byzantine"- you ought to know that Xen. :) The term is the invention of modern westerners!

I personally tend to be reluctant to use the term "Byzantine" until after the Arab invasions at the earliest...although I should probably not use it at all, as only westerners for some reason like to avoid calling the early medieval Roman Empire by its official name, I am most likely to use the term when the emergence of a Neo-Western Roman Empire emerges amongst the Germanic warlords of the West

I'm going to download (and hopefully play) right now :)

Is there a reason you use the Viking guy as Heraclius?

If you don't want to use Ceasar, or something like that, then, at the very least, use Charles V. The face painting doesn't look very Roman.

LOL

Yeah, Heraclius famously possessed a distinctive red beard. :jesus:

Heraclius was born in Cappadocia, and spend a long time in Carthage. He was of Armenian stock. He spent much of his reign on campaign in desolate, war-like regions. He was no classical politician and he was no absolutist silk-clad oriental, Byzantine despot; but, quite frankly, a medieval war-lord of supreme genius. Ragnar simply looks like Heraclius.

The war-paint on Ragnar's face was the clincher! :)

Ragnar is not a convincing Roman, but he is a quite convincing Heraclius.

I'm surprised no-one has brought this up before though. ;)

Good luck :goodjob:

Like I said previously, the game won't be updated until I get palyer feedback, or unless a serious, serious issue is reported.

I think the sound for the MF Spearmen sounds a bit funny.

Also, the game stopped responding after the second turn (or it slowed down so much that my computer assumed it stopped responding). I'll see about transfering it to my laptop, which definately is a more up-to-date computer.

Yeah...that spearman sound was pissing me off. I played all the sounds in the spearman folder, and none had that sound....so i couldn't replace it...

If someone can track that sound down...I'd be grateful. :)

The scenario certainly stretches the resources of my laptop, which is the reason I couldn't test it like I could test the Conquistadors scenario....but my laptop has never stopped responding...:hmm:

I tried to alt-tab out, and my computer wouldn't go back to the program. When I hit ctrl-alt-delete, it said it wasn't responding. But my computer is messed up a lot.

Here are a few other things I noticed in the few turns I played (didn't have time to write earlier).

Civilopedia entries for buildings would be nice, just so I know for sure what something does.

Iconium starves the turn after the game starts (irrigate that plains square or something so this won't happen).

Nicipolis was literally producing nothing (it was blank), this isn't really a big deal, though, as I can just change it if I'm paying attention on the empy starting turn.

I'm going to take a wild guess and assume the tech tree isn't important (I couldn't research anything in less than 1000 turns).

Are the point of the Avar settlers so I can get free workers?

There's an ungarded Trebuchet in the middle of Sassinid territory, should I just disband it?

Just being picky, the death of the Persian Cavalry (Immortals on horseback) just shows one dying.

1) There are entries for the wonders, but not the buildings. This is covered in the readme.

2) Yeah, there were problems with about 7 cities for starvation in the test games. Iconium and Trebizond both had severe problems. It didn't really worry me too much, cause it sorts itself out within a few turns. However, I will fix it if I make a new verson :goodjob:

3) Nicpolis isn't producing anything? Not even trebuchets? You can't build there, you mean?

One of the central ideas of the scenario is to get away from the buildarama type game usual in civ3. I didn't want cities producing units....but rather, the wonders and the granaries. The scenario covers only a few decades, you start with some military units, and you get occasional levies. If you lose them, you should struggle to keep your cities. If both you and the Persians lose them....the Arabs should have an easy time of things later in the game.

4) No, the tech tree is completely irrelevant. The scenario is, after all, about an early medieval war. I would have set the the MIN research time to higher than a thousand turns if it'd let me ;) (Yeah, I know, the scenario doesn't last that long anyway :o )

5) Ideally, the Avar settlers should be settled by the Avars. If the Avars are not controlled by the AI, then the strategy (historical) of settling in the midst of Roman territory should be an option!

6) The trebuchet...do what you want with it. It was supposed to be a scout. Thanks for spotting that...I'll be sure to fix it.

7) Are you talking about the Persian cavalry's death FLC? If this is annoying to people....I'll check into it. However, I'm not very sure what you mean: "just shows one dying"? What else should be there.

I don't make units, all I could do is find another unit, or a similar units death FLC to replace it. :)

3) Nicpolis isn't producing anything? Not even trebuchets? You can't build there, you mean?

No, just that it was a blank screen when it started (I had to manually change it, and I could produce most of the stuff).

It wasn't a big deal. Its the MF unit (Immortal on Horseback), only, when it dies, the units around it vanash, and the center one dies.

The Persian Cavalry is MF?

The Arabian Horseman has a MF default, MF attack, single defense.

But its not a big deal :)

HELLO,

Im new to this. I have Civ III gold edition. Can I download your scenerio and play it or does one need Civ conquests? If I can, is there somewhere where I can go for pointers on how do it correctly. It sounds very technical. By the way, your game looks AWESOME!!!!!
