I've moved - from the UK to the US. Naturally, I brought my copy of Civ 3 Complete with me, and installed it on my in-law's PC.

Now: I'm really, really, bad when it comes to finishing games. On my own PC (currently somewhere on a boat in the middle of the Atlantic...) there are dozens of unfinished saves, going back 2 years (the length of time I've had that particular PC).

So... I figured I'd resolve to finish every game I start, even ones that go wrong. (I'm allowed to retire, that counts as a completion.)

I've just finished my first game - a Monarch-level spaceship win as the Byzantines, finishing in 1345AD. Three AIs (England, Arabia, Inca) had crept into the Industrial age when I finished. One (Carthage) only just managed to get to the Medieval age, and that was long after I was in the Modern age.

Can I do it though? Will I be able to break my habit?

My next game will be Emperor level, on a standard-sized map, with default rules and VCs. I'm open to suggestions as to a variant (just not AW - AWE is a step too far for me!), a civ, opponents, world type etc.

I was in the described situation for quite awhile. IMO, If you can't finish Monarch games because they get too boring, well, it is obvious that you will win. Bump up a level. It will be hard at first. You need to pay constant attention to everything. It is a much slower game overall, but I have found it to be a lot more interesting/less boring.

I have no problems winning at Emperor either. I play Monarch games because I can play with other distractions in the background, make tons of mistakes, and still win.

If I were truly going up a level, it'd be to Demi-God. That would require a level of concentration and isolation I don't really have right now.

I have the opposite problem. I cannot help, but play to the end, regardless. Worse I sometimes feel compelled to play on after I have won till all the tiles are mine. Even worse, I may even play on till I have improved all tiles, and no one else is even alive.

Thought I do not always have to go to that extreme. I do it at all levels, does not matter if I play a huge map or a std map or if I picked up a game from someone else.

Not a sickness yet, but not far off.

Eldar you can handle DG. I think civ does not require concentration at high levels, only reduced carelessness. You have to be more diligent about checking on the things you already know you should. Less of that enter key and finding you have rioting towns or forgot to start this build or move that unit.

I know all that ;) Just when there's a TV show / argument / demanding wife/child/dog occupying the other half of my brain, it's easy to forget such things

good luck with your new life in the colonies, eldar ;)

I've had similar problems with finishing my games. Now I've changed to playing 20k culture games most of the time. I'm always trying to beat my own best finishing date, and I often know if there is a chance to do it before I've done half of the ancient age. If I know I don't have a chance I'll dump the game early, so I won't waste much time on it. If there seems to be a decent chance, I'll finish the game.

What makes the difference for me is that 20k games have a well defined goal, and with a goal like that I don't lose my interest in the game.

20k is my favourite VC as well, mainly because it doesn't demand concentration on very rapid expansion, fast military domination, and so on.

As long as you know whats going on in your capitol… :D There's no panic if other cities riot a few times during a game.

Five built city Conquest/Domination with Russia? No AA UU, but the Cossacks could add a lot of fun to the end.
