New Diplomacy Game: Civdip XII - Broken Resolutions

Hmm? The deadline is still Friday...11 pm GMT, I've changed nothing...Wednesday/Thursday/Friday = 3 days.

I've maybe just confused matters in a Tony Blair type way.

All right gentlemen, the administrator has given us three more days to plot and scheme. I want to see knives in someone else's back, not just mine...

Damn, I knew I couldn't get that out with a straight face...

Well, I'll probably have one in mine...

I had a connection problem with my flight and got back a whole day later. I will be able to write everyone in a few hours just not at present! I think the Friday deadline will be OK still.

P.S A big thank you to all played for c.c'ing me and also for getting in your orders in way ahead of schedule - keep it up!
Well, you might not have seen it all :(.

Clicking the reply to all is not yet an automatism for me.

About the deadline.

To me, it seems quite obvious that a deadline is only moved when a new date&time have clearly been communicated to all.
In other words: the deadline was yesterday. I very much dislike unbalancing the game by NMRs/late orders, so if it is up to me, we shouldn't be that strict, yet simply assuming the deadline was actually moved three days, seems a bit of a strange conclusion, imho.

Newsflash!

The French fleet prevents the Royal Navy landing marines in Brest!

Newsflash!

Raw materials pour into the steel and cotton mills and the munitions factories to produce new uniforms and weapons for brand new armies and fleets that will take to the field of combat this Spring.

In Germany, there has been a massive drive to build ships...beds, pans and even statues have been melted down to equal the British Navy tonne for tonne at sea.

In France, Italy and Turkey too the ship-yards are filling with new craft, from battleships to torpedo boats to landing craft.

The combatants are now more certain of their intended victims, this shall certainly be an interesting year of kill or be killed.

I'm sorry, guys! How a 2-hour trip turns into 3 days, I don't know. I will be communicating with all shortly.

Newsflash!

The human slime that was the previous Sultan of Turkey has been deposed by the dashing and capable commander of the Palace Guard in a popular coup. Turkish forces are given last minute orders to rush to the frontier to ward off an Austro-Russian offensive in the Black Sea and Bulgaria!

The English Navy leaves the English Channel falsely believing they would be seeing a friendly Germanic fleet taking over patrol duties of this vital shipping lane!

Austrian forces with German assistance put the Italians on the run!

Game News

Despite heroic efforts by your GM to get Pellaken to supply orders he chose to try and wreck this game. Thankfully I was able to enlist Sheep2 into the fray and his initial moves were sensible ones.

Please note: I wasn't so foolish to not think as did many of you that Pellaken probably would pull a stunt like this, I just tried to appeal to his better nature and kept on his case and found that this didn't matter at all.

The new player is Sheep2 and his e-mail address is liammaddrell@hotmail.com and I hope that you'll take the opportunity to make full use of having an active player as Turkey.

A big sorry for the 20 hour delay, but I was hoping to get Pellaken to respond, but he rejected even IM when he was online, thankfully an Aussie up at 4 am was able to step in and help :)

Italy's off to the real Tyrolia, is he not? If he's not back or in contact within the necessary 36 hours, may we not just assume he did the only sensible thing and retreated to Albania?

What was the deal with Pellaken? Why was everyone so sure he would drop out? I'm lost and confused.

I think we could use a little realpolitik in that situation ;)

Some of us have posted here for a long, long time and know his history here and also when he was Weimar Republic.

I'd heard of his reputation, but thought that he wouldn't disappear until someone turned up the heat on him...

Newsflash!

The Italian Army retreats to Albania, which could be technically be considered retreating in a forward direction!

The deadline for Fall 1902 is Wednesday the 26th of January at 11:30 pm GMT.

I hope people will put in provisionals ASAP to avoid any problems. Hopefully the Italian will be able to make the deadline, if not we'll allow an NMR.

Remember anyone can request an extension to the deadline if necessary ;)

Happy hunting! :)

Hi all,

I did send provisional orders.

Oh, and before I forget, the German Kaiser can't be trusted ;) .

Hmm, One Dip player saying that another Dip player can't be trusted? Say it ain't so!

I trust diplomacy players in general to act in what they see as their own best interest. I write emails, sometimes (mostly?) long ones to try to get them to see their own best interest as I do. There is often a reason for them to co-operate with me, and vica-versa. And eventually, that reason may go away.

I hate it when someone else explains to one of my allies why the reason for the old alliance (with me) has gone away and they should cooperate with that other person, instead of me. I don't know why, I just think I should be more persuasive, and better understand how the other person sees his situation. Sometimes alliances go on due to momentum, even though they may not lead to the best possible outcomes for all alliance members. Change can be hard. You may not want to change alliances too often.

It is my opinion, and may not be reality, that the better players let the board tell them what to do. If player A (no, lets not use A, it is so often for Austria.) If an unspecified player has an alliance that it seems to him will lead to someone else winning, that alliance needs to be changed, and so often the best way to end an alliance is with a stab. It is hard to stab your enemies, they expect you to attack them. Most of the time you can only stab an ally.

I submit that we should trust other players to see what is best for them and act accordingly. It is in our interest to explain why existing or potential alliances are in the best interest of our alliance partners. Someone else may be suggesting reason it isn't. If you can't think of a good reason, than maybe you are about to be stabbed.

A very good comment barron, one that I sometimes need to remember myself when I am playing. ;)

Certianly, if it seems strange that someone is in an allance with you (i.e. they do not benifit), then you can expect to be stabbed fairly soon.

Another point the Baron made to me in a prior game is that many end in three player draws because the other two can put aside their knives quickly to avoid a loss.

From this, I guess that if you find a logical ally early on, then it makes good sense to figure our a split of the board that suits both of you.
