Started a new game on CIV3 a few days ago. Decided to try the "settler factory" method from this site. My observations:

1. On the replay I noted that my empire spread more slowly than my previous method. At FIRST. However my empire quickly started expanding faster than the other civs once I got the settler "factories" rolling. Anytime a city reached 6 pop and could produce a settler about in time for a new population increase I started producing settlers.

2. Technological development has been much better than previous games. I suppose that's due to my city's population not being gutted continuously once the cities reach 3 pop.

Just thought you guys might enjoy the feedback. I'd include the most recent save file but don't know if that would be useful or not.

Glad to hear it's going well.

You can share your save or not, as you see fit, but we'll always be able to get more information from a save than from being told about the game. Besides, different players will look at different things in the save. Some might look more closely at city placement, others at the composition of your army, etc.

I'll see if I can post the save file here once I'm nearly done.

Sorry - the, "settler factory?"

A town with granary, high net food and sufficient production to produce a settler every few turns. Say 2 turns to grow from size 5 to 6, two more turns to grow from size 6 to size 7 and the settler completes when growing to size 7 which will therefore be only size 5. So a settler is produced every 4 turns.

also had never managed to do it myself , too . Any other sweetspots like that , meaning other city sizes ?

The size 5-7 is definitely a sweet spot, but any time you can time 2 growth cycles with 30 shields, you've got a settler factory. Some cycle in 4 turns, some in more, just depending on food and shield yields. If you have tons of shields, but low food, you can also create 'combo factories.' I seem to recall being in a succession game and we made a 'warrior-settler pair factory,' or something like that.

thanks .

Alright, finally finished that game. Took nearly forever thanks to the huge map, my sporadic playing times. Finally won via cultural victory in 1959. Was about to lay the hammer down and finish off Babylonia, lol. Just on warlord difficulty, but still earned "Joan of Arc The Magnificent" :D Here's the savefile. Criticism welcomed, but remember this is plain vanilla CIV 3 (I think). Forgive some of the juvenile city names :D

I'm pretty sad nobody has bothered to check out my game :( Was expecting to get ripped apart for using Cultural buildings :D

But we already know you won! Besides, if you won by culture, you pretty clearly did everything I never do. :mischief:

LOL...I'm a traditionalist :D You youngsters and your sci-fi ways are beyond me! I was a little surprised I didn't make it to 2000 AD before winning the game though. Heck, I didn't even have a chance to build all the wonders or discover all the tech.

ı once modded the 180x180 Earth map that comes with the install to have extra techs like 1850 , 1860 and so on . Designed to give a new tech for the first player to discover them so that ı wouldn't be stalled and the game wouldn't end before 2000s ...
