New Great People

I was thinking that they have a good ratio Men/women in the list but if they ever want to add more females to the list of Great People, they could add:

1) Marie Curie: I just checked to be sure, How is she not in the list?? She could be a Great Scientist like James Young that allow you to see Uranium without the tech requirement.

2) Inés de Suarez: She was a "conquistadora" of the territory of the actual Chile and became quite famous after leading the defense of Santiago de Chile against the mapuche in 1541

3) Isabel Barreto: She was a sailor, traveler and the first woman to have achieved the rank of Admiral in the Spanish Navy (XVI century) and, maybe Europe. She could be an interesting Great Admiral as she literally was one!

As always, my propositions are more focused on Spanish and French history (as I know them better), but I would love if other members in the forum known other women that could be add to the roster of Great People!

If it interests anybody, I made a spreadsheet of all current Great People to see if there's any area we might be getting more of, and how the current roster is representation-wise. As expected, there's a pretty heavy European/Western bias (I mean, look at the Great Writers and Engineers, for example), and most of the non-European GP are from the Indian subcontinent and East Asia. Sub-Saharan Africa only has two GP (Ana Nzinga and Samori Touré), sadly. In this spreadsheet, I wrote down female GP's names in red, and highlighted the non-European/Western GP (admittedly there was a lot of gray area with certain figures, like Simon Peter or Artemisia). Also, a good deal of GP really don't fit the era, time-wise. I mean, Joseph Paxton? Sofonisba Anguissola? :crazyeye:

EDIT: Gomes should be considered non-European/Western too.

That is a very interesting file!
Put it this way, it seems a little umbalanced (Geographically).

And you are right, I never noticed that Jeanne d'arc was a "rennaisance" GP. Why not medieval? Sure, she is close to the end of the middle ages, but in middle ages non the less...

@Luxerne, laid out this way the anomalies in the Great People list really stand out. Thank you!
Specifically, how far they reached in some cases to include 'unusual' Great People and yet still managed to skew the list in both geographical and gender terms.

Also, does anyone else notice how many of the Information Era Great People did not, in fact, do their famous work or even live in the Information Era? Werner von Braun (1944 - 1967 prime work) and Karel Capek (died in 1938, didn't even make it to the Atomic Era, technically) both jumped out at me (Confession: most of my games end well before the Information Era, so I was not familiar with the 'Great People' list from that Era at all)

I mean, I guess Capek can be explained by copyright on the works of the cultural GP. The GWAM roster rather abruptly cuts off at people that died in the 1930s and 1940s (Liu, Jaan, Fitzgerald, Tagore, Sher-Gil, etc.), which is when their works become public domain in the USA. Capek's actual in-game works are both pieces of sci-fi, so I guess the devs thought it "fit" the last era of the game thematically even if he didn't actually live in the late 20th/early 21st century.

On another note, we had seen evidence that Christine de Pizan was going to be included as a Medieval writer prior to the game's release, when that Chinese leak of all GP went around. I also found evidence that Abdul Muis, an Indonesian writer, was apparently in the game at one point. He died in 1959, though, so I'm assuming that's why he was cut out. Not sure why de Pizan would be cut, though. I also found some remnants of what apparently seems to have been third great works planned for the musicians. Yatsuhashi, Liu, and Jaan all have third great works included ("Midare," "Bei Ge," and "Thumri" respectively) in the text files.

Copyright can be a real problem for any game trying to include near-contemporary historical people. That means that many of the pioneering (Grand Masters) of Science Fiction had to be left out - Isaac Asimov, Poul Anderson, Robert Heinlein, and Theodore Sturgeon for four obvious Giants of the field.

And I'm not surprised that there are 'extra' Great Works stashed away in the game: many if not most of the Great Artists/Writers/Musicians in the game produced more than 2 - 3 Great Works!

Great Entertainers? Great Diplomats? Doubt we'll see either, but Entertainment District does sort of float uncomfortably in the current district/great person system.

You could have a great sports person (from entertainment districts, water parks and national parks) that has some gold, tourist, culture, amenity, appeal, diplomatic favour or grievance buff.

I like the Great Philosopher idea as a Great Scientist but for culture. And something for the Entertainment District. To get more prophets could work too as some religious combat Great General. And have them enhance your religion instead.

Great Entertainers should be associated with the entertainment district. There is a wealth of them to choose from as you can include athletes, actors, stage actors, early film actors, performing poets, etc. Pretty easy to grab a great many from around the world with so wide a net too.

Especially since, like the Entertainment District, Great Entertainers affect Morale and Happiness like that District does.
I believe there are even records of champion chariot racers that could be associated with Byzantium's new Hippodrome District!
