New laptop - trying to play Civ 3

I just got a new laptop and decided to dig out Civ 3, hoping it would finally run a lot faster on a new computer.

I installed it from the CD, everything went fine. The problem comes when I try to install the 1.29f patch. I get a message saying "Error installing iKernel.exe: The specified network name is no longer available."

So I tried just copying over the patched file from my old computer, but it doesn't work either. When I try to run it then, nothing happens. Nothing at all.

What should I try? Has anyone else had this happen?

Download the patch from a different site??

Alternatively, try installing C3C over Civ3; that should patch it at the same time.
