New Mac patch soon?

You guys always find out this stuff before I do. ;) I honestly have no clue, as I don't know how involved the patch will be. My hunch at the moment is that it'll be similar in scope to the last patch, maybe a little larger in terms of bug fixes judging from the version # jump. We don't have a lot of free time due to other scheduled commitments and the Mac Civ3 editor, so I can't promise a speedy turnaround.

I don't know how it will affect the editor - past PC patches have also patched the PC editor too. If they've added radical changes there, like the addition to place units and whatnot, that'll obviously impact delivery of the Mac editor, unless we do a staggered release. There's no way to tell yet.

Brad

Thanks for the info, Brad. I know you'll get the patch and editor out as soon as you can. I really appreciate your commitment to the playing community, kind of a rare thing these days. :goodjob:

Brad, just curious as to where things are with your many projects. Any idea on the mac patch / editor?

I'm sorry. I cracked!

I'm at WWDC this week, but if time permits, I may be able to submit it to MacSoft for final approval while I'm attending. Once that happens, I'll focus on the editor again.

Thanks Brad! Maybe by the end of next week I can join some SGs with PC people...

Keep up the good work Brad, I cannot imagine a GOTM without us Mac players! We have to show them that we are a formidable force in Civ! :-)

Don't feel bad - I was about to. ;)

I think at this point, we all are.. we just have to keep in mind that Brad's just one person.

What's the word on 1.21? Is it out of your hands?

Hi,
Saw a post from Brad today on comp.sys.mac.strategic today. He basically said that he is devoting all his time right now to the patch and that at present he expects it to be out in a couple weeks. Now, don't quote me on that time frame - we all know that could change easily. But he is doing all he can and I am sure we all appreciate his efforts - especially since he is doing this out of the kindness of his heart and is under no obligation to do so.

Was he talking about the patch or editor? Check his last post in this thread. It implies sooner than two weeks which would be three weeks from when he posted. Unless, there was a problem w/ the "final candidate" patch.

Hi,
He was talking about the patch. Here is the thread:

Okay, now I'm getting miffed. I appreciate that Brad is busy finishing
'SW: Galactic Battlegrounds', but MacSoft still has an obligation to
support Civ3. The PC 1.21 patch has been out for almost a month. Please
give us -some- sort of progress report.

I've been working on it about full time for 2 weeks now (SW:GB is taking
up close to zero of my time now that it's in approvals), barring a week
off for WWDC. My obligation ended when Civ3 shipped, even if MacSoft's
didn't, so I'm doing it for free for them. If you don't like my pace,
then all I can suggest is wait a bit longer. I'm spending some extra
time trying to reproduce and fix the bugs that have been reported to me
since 1.17g since I'm not anxious to work on it again.

I'm quite tired of doing free patches for Civ3 (this marks my third one
now), so enjoy it when it arrives. If you're miffed at having to wait a
whole month, then imagine how miffed I am at spending a whole month
working on it, only to be greeted with posts like yours. I can think of
a few things I can do to prevent that from happening in the future. ;-)

And why aren't you holding them up for some cash? It seem that you're
in a very good bargaining position for some "hey, I gotta eat" money...

I don't gotta eat - I've got other paying projects. To be frank, I don't
care about it that much. If I _wanted_ to do this patch, and I _needed_
money, it would be different.

First, if you're not getting paid for the patch, that's between you and
MacSoft. I would never ask anyone to work for free, so don't smack -me-
with that particular guilt trip. But since it's out there now, thank you
for your extra work.

Second, I have no problem with waiting, so long as I know progress is
being made. I'd already asked twice before (nicely, I might add) and
essentially got nothing, so naturally I was getting anxious. Now that
you've spoken up, I'm happy as a clam.

Long story short, don't take it so personally.

Thanks again.

My apologies. Since you mentioned me by name (and brought up
Battlegrounds, which is totally unrelated), I assumed you wanted a
detailed reply from me. Obviously the best people to ask are MacSoft,
but they rarely post here, which I'm sure you've noticed by now.

I don't take it personally, but I want to emphasize this point: if you
feel that a few weeks of no updates is enough to get "miffed" over, then
continuing to post here about it is not going to get you very much
sympathy from me. In fact, I would characterize it as an extreme lack of
sympathy. ;-) I hope that's clear so the next time a week or two goes by
without a update from me on something, you'll understand why I don't
jump out of my chair to reply.

That's it. You can see for yourself what he has to say. I hope this helps.

Brad, some of us really appreciate your efforts. Please ignore the whiners. The patch and the editor will get here when they get here - and then, of course, somebody will start a thread to ***** about them. :aargh:

Damn, I keep forgetting about the asterisk gods!

BTW, dinner's on me if you ever find yourself in southeastern Virginia (aka the shallow end of the gene pool).

Thank you for this ferretloverdc. It is somewhat humbling and puts our impatience for the new patch + the Editor into perspective. I really appreciate Brad's candour.

I also wonder how many Mac-Civ3s are out there. If there are not that many of us, then MacSoft's lack of support is understandable--and I'm reminding myself that it is the publisher who has responsibility here for any angst that we might feel. I always remind myself when playing SMAC/X on Mac OS X that I am doing so because of Brad's generosity (he did the conversion and made it available on his iTools Public site--nothing in it for him remuneration-wise).

Slightly off-topic; it's nearly 9am in Australia and I went to see Star Wars2 at midnight. It left me wanting to get my hands on SW: Galactic Battlegrounds so I can get in there and fight the Clone Wars. Until those goodies arrive in my hands, I'm looking forward to 1.21 and the Editor to assuage my--somewhat simple--gameplay desires.

Bought it at the opening day of Macworld SF back in January. Still addicted. One thing I noticed was that the review finally hit this month's (June ed.) Macworld magazine, and I think it was in last month's Macaddict. Press like that is probably the biggest producer of sales beyond word of mouth, especially in the Mac realm.

We might still be seeing our mac 'civilization' growing :D. Finally found a cow square .

Don't get mad, get typing:-

As someone else advised me on another thread, we need to let MacSoft know that they have let us down. Please email: <macsoftgames@mac.com>
regarding:

1. The lack of new 1.21 patch for Mac OS X;
2. Where is the Editor?;
3. Why are there no announcements at E3 regarding the Civ3:Play the World expansion for the Macintosh?
