New Patches are up

I always thought it was piracy. Initially I only had the Original Civ2 and the CiC add-on. I couldn't play most scenarios --a real tragedy. Using Cedric's MGE 'patch' posted at CFC, I was able to update my version and have been able to play everything in every mode since then. Since I bought the original, and was unable to find MGE anywhere, I think it's fair.

EDIT: (Actually, that's not entirely true: I did find it on Ebay on a few rare occasions, but kept getting outbid at the last second. Funny thing, in 2 of the 3 times it was BY THE SAME BIDDER!)

Also remember that the Cedric didn't include any of the scenario files so you're still not really getting MGE for free --and, as mentioned above, you at least paid for a version of the game. If it weren't for Cedric's patch, I probably wouldn't have ever registered on CFC or got into scenario-design.

Perhaps Cedric should not have included the ExtendedOriginal for ToT since it isn't essential for the running of the game. You could even argue that ToT is still available on the market (albeit rarely) so people should try and buy it --I did. Interesting note: I actually bought ToT before I 'upgraded' my original Civ2 thinking that it would be compatible with MGE, so I would be getting everything in one easy package along with the other ToT features. It was only once I tried loading an MGE scenario that I found out the awful truth.

Even though it is a form of piracy, one could argue that this at least allows players who would otherwise probably never get the chance to try out ToT, to do so.

Also note that not all the people who use this patch are not necessarily from N. America or Europe so it's probably hard enough to get any version for those not living there.

In my opinion, the more people there are playing Civ2, the better!

Either way, to Cedric Greene: THANK YOU.
