Welcome to CFC, iduntgetit [party]

Try out the in-game help called Civilopedia. It explains a lot, especially what terrain improvements do and so on.
You could also have a glimpse at the War Academy on this page, where you can find introductory courses to the game.

Eventually you will want roads on every tile. At the start you want to focus on the best tiles. Read Crackers thread on Opening Moves in the War Acad.

It expains why one tile is better and need prioity over another. Mines are great, but gold is found on hills and mountains and that means more worker turns to mine and road, so hold off on those, till you can spare the workers.

Use tiles on rivers to gain an extra commerce, if all things are eaual. IOW if you have two grass tiles and one is not on a river, use the river tile first.

I seem to remember doing a similar thing a long time ago. Don't worry about a lack of a manual; it's next to useless. Use this site to get the help you need.

Unfortunately roading golden hills or mountains doesn't automatically give you the gold; the citizens in your towns need to be working those tiles. The trouble is that hills and mountains lack food and so you are probably not using them. It is a common Newbie mistake to get workers devoloping tiles that will not be used by a city for ages. A decent manual might have stopped players from doing this.

Double click on a city to see which squares your people are working. It will show the tiles contained in the 20 tile fat cross covered by that town and which of them are being used by the town's population. Whatever tiles are being worked need to be roaded and developed. Each roaded tile worked will give you an extra gold piece per turn. The only tiles that you should road without working are resource tiles. Luxuries (such as wines and gems) and strategic resources (like horses and iron) can be used by having a road connected from a city to the resource as long as they are within your borders. Otherwise you'll need to set up a colony to access them.

As well as roading tiles, I suggest that you mine or irrigate them to improve production. Your best bet is to follow the rule 'mine green, irrigate brown' until you learn the game rules in more detail.

vmxa, as usual, offers excellent advice. Cracker's Opening Plays Site is an excellent read, stuffed full of great advice. Once you've looked at that you might want to give the War Acadamy another visit. It's not all about how to win by fighting :)
