Hello Civ Fanatics,

I recently bought Civ 6 and I have been enjoying it! I am working on several play-throughs with different civs to help learn the system but I am still missing some things I think and I hope someone could enlighten me.

I play mostly on Huge Island maps (with less AI/CS than standard) as I love exploration; but I am running into production bottle necks and not sure how to handle it early in the games.

Cities on the coast seem to not be able to generate as much production yield and I feel like I am severely limiting myself playing island maps where coastal settling "should" be a benefit; anyone know if maybe I just got bad seeds or what I can do enhance my production?

Also a quick question about city goals; should I focus on making a city into 1 type of district driven city then grow my civ to have a city per district? or can it be viable to build the same districts across multiple cities assuming I have the build "space" i.e don't need to focus on military etc.

Thanks in advance! Hope to learn more!

You are going to want multiple districts and multiple copies of them across your civ.
They generate GP points.

Any city that can plonk a harbor/shipyard/seaport you want one (maybe not by harvesting a resource tho)
lighthouse: food/housing
harbor gives a trade route.
shipyard production
seaport gold!

etc.

Now, what to build is always a question.

You may only want one Theater district early on, for the civic boost.
You'll be wanting 2 harbors, 2 markets/banks, 3 workshops/factories etc.
Look through the tech/civic trees and see what the boost requirements are.

Eurekas can let you bypass some of those, but still. It's a starting point.

Islands though, harbors. Lotsa those. (see above)

my 2 coppers. :)

Thank you so much for the insight! I really appreciate it.

I think I am just expecting things too early in terms of a "tangible" feel to growth. More games hopefully will help.

I am really enjoying the Japanese civ atm; I like the flexible bonuses. Another question I had was relating to district placement (in regards to meji restoration), what "bonus" do you get from adjacency?

Another issue with coastal cities seems to be a limit on district placement.

I need to reread the guides here too for some insight into mechanics.

Thanks again for answering and to anyone else who chimes in!

My 2 pennies as a coastal player excuding what the fine @Canadian Bluebeer said as it's pointless to repeat.

It's not common before T100 to have cities above 7 population. Whether by the coast or inland it's about having good production yield tips at the start that really make a difference and with coastal cities having less tiles there is less choice.

At around T50, maybe before if things are right you can be converting hills to mines and often coastal cities can have 4-5 hills so catch up a bit but yes, it all comes down to less tiles to choose from if you average it out over games.

However coastal cities have their own advantages as said, especially as Victoria who I play all the time. I never have a district placement problem as my cities never get above about 13

Thank you Victoria! I am currently going through the list of Civs (haven't gotten any DLC or mod civs yet) looking for ones that coastal themed - England will be next for me! Thank you for the help everyone!

I am currently going through the list of Civs (haven't gotten any DLC or mod civs yet) looking for ones that coastal themed

Brazil has a great early battleship
Spain can make armada earlier
Japan gets a combat bonus in shallow waters
England gets the royal Navy dockyard (1/2 price harbor that makes ships with +1 movement and make an additional +2 gold off your home continent. They also have the sea dog which has a chance of capturing an adjacent major civ ship rather than kill it based on combat difference.
Germany gets Uboats.

if playing with lots of harbors, try and get the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, its great with admirals.

I recently started a game as Victoria on the Island Plates map, and the royal Navy Dockyard has been so helpful! I was able to get a few early cities near the coast (had to take a nearby CS, Geneva was still still beyond Hattusa) and then I had a good chance to take Madrid. They had 2 settlers that were getting ready to leave the small island where Madrid was so it was good timing!

Afterwards China/Germany DoW but did not have any forces near me other than some early naval unit, apostles, and 2 settlers - I was able to recruit a few Admirals too so I will keep my eye out for the Mausoleum.

Thanks for all the help!

I keep forgetting about that museum. It is kinda handy. I'm adding it to my list of wonders to try and get.

(after I'm done fiddling around with silly things and firetuner. Having a lot of fun with that)

Internal trade routes will also help with production. You can move them to different cities and certain districts will give you extra cogs (encampment for instance). You can transfer your traders to coastal cities and create trade routes with your other cities to help them build up infrastructure more quickly. Also - try to settle coastal cities near forest/jungle if possible so you can chop it down for extra production - that helps a lot.

Thank you Eliminator_Sr! My recent game as Victoria I am around year 1070 AD and have about 12 trade routes; my newest cities have been having Traders sent to them to assist in production so they can get a builder out.

Another thing I figured out was that I don't need to settle directly on the coast to be able to build on coastal tiles - if my ignorance was not apparent, now it is lol - so I had a city that was able to be near a fresh water lake and was have a Royal Naval Yard! Part of me wants to start another game now that I know that.

The nice thing about settling on the coast is your harbour gets +2 gold for being adjacent to your city. A commercial district gets +2 being next to a harbour.

Add a river mouth and a couple of fish in there and your royal harbour is off continent +7 gold and your CH is +5 gold. No real need to build the CH buildings with +12 from the districts apart from getting great merchants and moar gold

Naturally a shipyard and double harbour adjacency means +19 gold and +14 production...:crazyeye:
