I just researched the tech for franchises, but I don't have a choice in which franchises I can start. No other civ has started one, so thats not the issue.
Is there some prerequisite I just can't find, known bug, or some other reason why this would be the case?
I'm fairly new to VP, so I apologize if there is an obvious answer that I am missing.

I have a strategic monopoly over a required resource, not a global monoply. It's somewhat frustrating that available franchises are soft lock by starting location, but I'll live.

Thanks!

Franchises are part of a Corporation. Each corporation require you to have a monopoly on one of several possible luxuries/strategic resources for you to build them.
Those are not random. A specific corporation will always need one the same resources.

You get a monopoly buy owning more than half existing resources on the map, and having more than anyone else (meaning there will always be at most one player with monopoly on a specific resource at a time).

Monopolies also provides empire wide bonuses. For example, salt provide +10% food in all cities.

I appreciate the response. My complaint was directed at each civ starting near most of only one random resource, which in turn randomly limits the corporations any given civ has access to.

That is true. But it also reduce competition around each specific corporation, and a case can be brought that limiting options brings replayability. There are also some civs that get unique luxuries (and an assured corporation with it), and ultimately, conquest is an option.

Fair point.

Now that you're aware of how this works you may be able to plan accordingly earlier in the game. You'll start to see which monopolies you may be gaining control of in the future. And sometimes it's just the luck of the draw. Trust me I didn't expect for my mighty Arabian Empire's Corporation to have the logo of a neon high heel shoe.

I played VP a couple times in Septemper so the changes to corporations caught me off guard and my frustration was mostly just knee jerk reaction. Please correct me if I am wrong, but the resources required for each corporation seem to only be viewable after completing the required tech. While this is only an issue for new players, it would be nice to see the requirments for each corporation ahead of time to make it a little easier to plan.

The Civilpedia is your friend. All the information about the game is already included in this. Looking up the exact corporation details is confusing... The game isn't in front of me, but the information is separated into the separate buildings and franchises. What you want to look up is the corporation itself. And then the required resources are listed. Each Corporation has several different resources that you could gain a possible Monopoly to construct this corporation.

I believe when you first enter the Civil pedia one of the first categories is corporations. Click on that and it should expand to the information you're looking for.
