Over the past three weeks, we have had an active discussion of spoiler threads among the GOTM staff members and we have reached a consensus that some changes need to be made to help guide the process in supporting the main mission goals for the Games of the Month.

In recent months, some of the spoiler threads have drifted into a virtual race to see who can spill the beans first instead of a being a tool to promote discussion of various aspects of the game.

Discussion is a critically important part of the GOTM process and we do not really want to do anything that will discourage players of all skill levels from participating freely in the discussion threads.

I feel that many of the issues with how these spoiler/discussion threads evolve can be addressed by making a few simple procedural changes that are backed up with a clearer set of rules and a little bit more active participation by the moderators and staff members to help guide the process.

One of the tasks we have accepted as members of the GOTM staff is for many of the staff members to play the GOTM very early in the month so that we will be available to participate freely in the discussion from the very beginning.

A second major change that we need to implement is a new rule that prohibits any individual player from opening spoiler threads of any kind without first contacting the GOTM Administrator by email or PM. For now, the administrative task falls to me, so I will have the responsibility for determining if a new spoiler or discussion thread needs to be opened. Reserving the task of opening spoiler threads to the administrator will help us assure that the threads have the appropriate disclaimer title and that each thread begins with an announcement message that makes it clear what topics and information may be included in the discussion thread.

To make this clear, effective with Gotm15-Russia (essentially effective immediately) spoiler threads may only be opened by a forum moderator.

The third major change we will implement this month is to divide discussion threads for the current games into time or topic segments. This change will be implemented to make it much clearer where you must be in the progress of your own game before you may join and participate in any of the discussions.

The ultimate objective here is to make it easier for players to know when they are doing the right thing by participating in the discussions and to provide a strong seperation between discussing things you have already done and the risk of discovering things you may not already know.

For Gotm15-Russia, we will have an announcement thread as soon as the game is ready for you to read the new "Scope of the Game" information and then to download the starting save game and begin play. Every player can use this thread to go "Whoopee", "Yeehaw", or "Oh My Gosh" to their hearts content but discussion of any information that is not clearly presented in the game announcement and the picture of the start position should be considered a big hairy no-no.

The first discussion thread for Gotm15-Russia will be opened on January 5th and will include a couple of minimum events (time and knowledge) that you will need to have passed in order to participate in the discussion up to that point. This first thread will not be allowed to include discussion of game events and knowledge that is beyond the cutoff events.

I will open subsequent discussion threads and spoilers to support additional discussion of the games beyond the first segment based on how I see the process unfold.

Plan ahead just a little bit as you begin to play Gotm15 and it is my hope that all players will be able to use these new procedures to make the discussion threads a more valuable, focused, and enjoyable experience.

We will be adding these changes to the new rules/Code of Conduct web pages and if you have any direct feedback on this subject you may contact me by email at gotm@civfanatics.net or you may post to this thread to foster further discussion.

I encourage every player to play and enjoy the Gotm15 game and to participate actively and appropriately in the accompanying discussion threads. I hope this helps to get us all off to a great start for the new year.

Is there any exception to this rule? For example: Would we be allowed to open a new spoiler thread for any GOTM iff (if and only if) the submission deadline has passed? That way, after the submission deadline, everyone can feel free to spill the beans and not to worry too much about rule and regulation. Anyway, it's just a thought; I support whatever decision you come up with.

The submission deadline will relax things a great deal but the key point is: "contact a forum moderator first".

You will see a number of "other" spoiler threads open up for each game and we want to encourage spoiler polls and other special topic discussions. The key thing that needs to be done is to contact the moderator to make sure that the spoiler thread gets opened in a way that does not cause somone to inadvertently spoil themselves.

As an example, if Zachriel had his "Exploits of Hambone" website ready to go, he could just contact the moderator and get the go ahead to publish his link to his spoiler website.

One of the hidden reasons for this rule is that we will now be indexing the spoiler discussions and trying to foster some more active topic discussions on issues that any given GOTM may specifically raise.

The intent is not to reduce or eliminate the spoiler threads but just to make sure that there are some controls, titles, and subject formats that help to put players more at ease.

Hopefully, you will see this a little better as we stumble through our first attempt at this new process with Gotm15-Russia.

Always feel free to PM me or email me if you feel that something needs to adjusted.

Of course, I didn't read this until after I posted my latest game. I will certainly follow the correct procedure next time.

Anyway, how did you know it was going to be called the "Exploits of Hambone?"

You were close. ;) Perhaps we'll just change the submit deadline to match the calendar and then it will look like you were right and the staff was just a little slow on the uptake. ;) ;)

Contact me a few days in advance next time and I will give you a thread ID number that you can use to more actively integrate the discussion/questions thread into your webformat.

Also, I can work with you to develop a news flash for the front page of the CFC main site so that everyone gets the benefit of your efforts and gets to enjoy your exploits.

I do not want to promote news announcements for spoilers on the Frontpage until after the game closes, so that may help you set some timing of your your future events.

Contact me also if you would be interested in being the first recipient of the "CFC Strategies Seal of Approval". Sort of like the 'good housekeeping seal of approval', this mark would be our way to honor your work and help set it apart from other civ sites that does not always reflect the same depth of though.

Congratulations on another great game!!

One thought.

It would be nice to know a timeline for threads and when they are going to be released.

For example

10ad and continent map on the fifth

Steam Power and full map on the 10th

Fission on the 15th

Endgame on the 20th

I can see the first half of this pattern forming. Are you planning on keeping this consistent? I think it's a great way of doing it, btw :D

Sorry I did not answer your question right away nightfa11.

I agree that a known timeline would be nice and originally I considered posting the schedule in the game announcement.

The only problem I could see with that is the fact that we will probably change the spoiler breaks to match the characteristics of each game. Since we have decided that one knowledgable person must take on the role of the "mapmaker" this gives us a fairly clear vision into where the spoiler breaks need to be in order to support the main objectives of the process but these can shift as players emerge and contibute their own perspectives to the process.

A key point of this process is to encourage discussion of the events of the game at times that are in close proximity to when the actual events in the game are completed but to try to do this when a large enough pool of knowledgeable players exist to support good discussion.

In the background, we have been tracking spoiler thread participation since back in October and looking at the various posts to classify them as "Reports, Short Reports, One Liners, Bad Conduct/Off Topic, and Discussions". These five classifications help us to understand how people use the spoilers and if the threads are serving an important function that supports the community objectives.

In some of the past spoiler threads the main purpose seemed to be a race to spill the beans as quickly as possible without actually fostering active reflection and discussion among players. We strongly hope that this conduct as well as the Bad Conduct issues will be things of the past.

One thing you also see in the process is me closely monitoring the discussion progress to decide when, where, and if the next spoiler thread should be opened. The is some truth to the "filling the vacuum" concept that if we delay opening the later spoiler threads for just a little bit of time it leads players to exercise their urges to talk about the game by discussing issues that are already open for discussion with their peers. There is no set formula for this, but I clearly am watching for reports of diverse approaches to the different phases of the game as well as a couple of key interchanges that form a foundation of discussion that should characterize the game.

No problem. I'm still trying to learn exactly what to discuss myself. The reason I thought a pre-announcement of the discussion break points would be nice is so that players would know how best to archive save games and notes.

Maybe an announcement of the timeline for each GOTM as it's released, or maybe just the breakpoints for the spoiler threads.

This is my first GOTM, so I'm still learning what I need to do to actively participate and contribute in the threads.

Thanks for your response!
