New SG: Tark1

@NewDestroyer: I didn't make that pic, it is just a link to an image GenghisFarb posted in the RCP article.

I can't find my Vanilla CD (must be at my flat), and I can't get the editor to import to/save as normal Civ3 file.

Have made a few starts:
Iroquois
Ottomans
Arabs
China

Good luck! :)

Edit: Will post the scenario file once you have uncovered the worldmap.

Either of those civs is fine by me.
But my preferences are Ottomans or Chinese. Both are industrious (fast workers are just sooo good) and have a very decent UU.

Ottoman or Chinese for me.

Ted

Hi guys,
It seemed that China had most votes so I started 20 turns with them.
Here goes:

Start.
Of course we build our city on the gold hill. Order a warrior in 5.
We play with Ottomans, Japanese, English, Carthaginians, Greeks, Russians, Babylonians.
We're the only ones with Warrior Code but the AI is keen to research it. Research nothing yet.
Turn 2 (3950BC) ?
Turn 3 (3900BC) ?
Turn 4 (3850BC) ?
Turn 5 (3800BC) Worker builds mine
Turn 6 (3750BC) Beijing: Warrior -> Warrior. Start exploring East.
Turn 7 (3700BC) Worker finishes road.
Turn 8 (3650BC) zzz
Turn 9 (3600BC) zzz
Turn 10 (3550BC) Beijing: Warrior -> Warrior. Start exploring North.
Turn 11 (3500BC) zzz. Start research on Pottery with 90% (due in 10).
Turn 12 (3450BC) zzz
Turn 13 (3400BC) Beijing: Warrior -> Warrior. Start exploring South.
Turn 14 (3350BC) zzz
Turn 15 (3300BC) Beijing: Warrior -> Pyramids. I imagine the AI thinking I must be crazy. Start exploring West. Several Goody huts spotted. Unfortunately we're not expansionist and I wouldn't open them.
Turn 16 (3250BC) A border is spotted.
Turn 17 (3200BC) Things are suddenly complicated. We meet Carthage. Barb attacks our warrior and loses. Another barb shows up. Carthage has Warrior code and Bronze and Alphabet. There's nothing to trade.
Turn 18 (3150BC) Seems there's a lot of barbs here.
Turn 19 (3100BC) zzz
Turn 20 (3050BC) Nothing much. Pottery due in one. Beijing to be switched to granary. The map build is pretty straightforward. Our first ring will be at distance 5. WE'll see about the second but we will be fighting then. I'll attach a dotmap with suggested order of builds.

Good choice with the Chinese.

As far as I can see every city will be on a river. The gold will come rolling in.
But we will have to spend some attention to unit movement (esp. workers) so we do not waste too many movement points when crossing.

Ohh, who is up now?

Is it me or Betazed??

As there doesn't seem to be an official roster then how about this?

Yndy - Cooling
Shevek - Playing
TedJackson - Warming
Betazed - Waiting

Apologies if I've missed anybody :)

regards

Ted

Sounds fine with me. Since Tark is the organizer for this game, he should maintain this in the future so that it is always very easy to find out who's playing and who's next. Helps keep the game moving along. :)

Got it.

Will play tonight.

IT - barb attacks warrior in south, warrior defeats him and promotes to vet

3000 BC (1) - warrior in S finds barb camp
Pottery in, pyramids switched to granary due in 4
Sell pottery + 10g to Hannibal for CB
set research to Mysticism at 80%, due in 18 turns
lux up to 20% as Beijing grows to 3

2950 BC (2) - worker finishes road, starts irrigating
warrior in S attacks camp and wins, nets 25g, another barb appears

2900 BC (3) - warrior in S is attacked and dies
warrior in E finds barb camp

2850 BC (4) - path of warrior in N sees 4 Cartheginian warriors, where are they heading to?
worker finishes irrigation, moves to wheat
warrior in E does not attack (lost one already) but moves S, as luck has it he runs into another barb

2800 BC (5) - Beijing granary --> settler due in 5 turns
worker roads wheat
we find loads of barbs in E

2750 BC (6) - zzzzz

2710 BC (7) - worker irrigates wheat (gotta love those industrious workers)

2670 BC (8) - warrior in N reaches coast

2630 BC (9) - worker finishes irrigation and moves SE
warrior in E stumbles upon 2 barb camps

2590 BC (10) - Beijing settler --> warrior, settler moves towards city place 1
worker builds road
lux down to 0
Hannibal now has wheel, hope we get mysticism before he gets it and can trade, now due in 12 at 100%

2550 BC (11) - lux up to 10% as Beijing grows, myst. now due in 9

2510 BC (12) - Beijing warrior --> warrior, just in time as barb pops out of hut W of Beijing
lux to 0
Shanghai founded, set to warrior
just N of Shanghai there is a Cartheginian warrior/settler pair, another warrior approaches from E
worker starts irrigation
darn, Hannibal now has Mysticism, must have gotten it from hut or found another civ
we have not seen so much as a border from all the other civs

2470 BC (13) - Hannibals warrior/settler pair moves off W into the unknown (there must be some resource or lux if he sends a settler so far away from his core??)
Barb moves S (Shevek wipes sweat from brow, thought barb might go for Shanghai)

2430 BC (14) - Beijing warrior --> warrior, moves to Shanghai
switch Shanghai from warrior to worker
worker moves to Shanghai, should have improved terrain there to start with, weed :smoke:

2390 BC (15) - barb comes towards Beijing from S
Carthaginians now have city N of Shanghai

2350 BC (16) - Beijing warrior --> warrior, warrior moves SE
worker starts irrigation of FP N of Shanghai
now there are 2 barbs milling around S of Beijing
warrior in N meets Japanese warrior
Japan has BW, Alphabet, Wheel, Myst. and contacts with Ottomans, English, Greeks, Russians and Babylonians, they do not sell any contact
Hannibal now has also contact with Russia and Japan
Myst. due next turn

2310 BC (17) - Finish Myst., set research to 0 as we are far behind and we might have better chances buying techs than researching them

2270 BC (18) - Beijing warrior --> archer, warrior moves S
Find Ottomans on Diplo screen, they are up BW, Alphabet, Wheel,
he would sell 1 contact for 4gpt + 77g, that is rather steep, so wait

2230 BC (19) - worker finishes irigation, starts road
Russia appears on Diplo screen, have all the techs the others have, so again no trade-around opportunities

IT - Greeks contact us and want 100g for wheel, decline as this is all our money and we cannot trade it around

2190 BC (20) - worker finishes road, moves SE onto BG

That's it.
We grow slowly and are are behind in tech
We got 117 g and make 13gpt.

Here is the save:

Shevek, I am aware you're not a deity level player but this is to let you know you blew our tech pace for now. I have not researched anything for the first ten turns of the game on purpose, I just started on Pottery to get the granary on time.

You did good to trade Pottery for CB but you should have kept research low until we met all the AIs. Moreover, you should have started a 40 turn gambit on Polytheism right after discovering Mysticism.

We should not trade any tech before we know all the other AI. When we do we must get Writing in order to be able to buy Map Making when it's available. (forget about all the other techs).

Shanghai should start on a granary asap and Beijing should start another Settler, we still have lots of land to settle. Barbs are nasty but I think we can manage, try to let the AI kill them and definitely do not open goody huts.

Ted Jackson: You're up for 20 turns
Betazed: On your mark
Yndy: Won't be in Monday
Shevek: Doing some weed

@Shevek: You may want to review some of the Emperor and Deity SGs that are on. Most of them do not do very badly in tech in the ancient ages. And almost research nothing at full speed apart from Pottery. The rest all come thru trades. Many of them do 40 turn gambits for second level techs hoping for some trade value. But, IMHO, in Deity I have found that too is very dubious. You are better off saving the money and turning research completely off.

The only tech I research at 40 turns is Republic (and in some unusual circumstances at full speed). Since this is a goverment type the AI asks for an arm, leg and your first born child (if Monty is the one you are trading with :) ) in return.

Till education techs mostly come thru trades exclusively. Even after that most of the techs come thru trade. If you check Bz2 we went thru the entire game without researching any tech at all (except pottery of course and I think Republic).

Hope that helps.

@ Yndy and Betazed
Thanks for the comments, will take it on board.
I think I'll learn loads by playing with you.

Ok, I am back again now.

As for order, TedJacksons suggestion is good with me :) It is you who are playing this after all.

Notes
I leave the trading to the next player. We could get CoL from Carthage for 59gp + 5gp/t. This would allow us to self-research Republic.
I think 5 as our first ring was a bit ambitious, especially with Carthage right on our doorstep, but I stuck with it for Canton. I chose Canton over the Gold hill (now Sabratha) mainly because of the presence of Dyes which will help our towns grow a little more without spending all our income on entertainment.
Shanghai is building a Temple to capture the 2 Wheat & 2 Cattle. Shanghai is, obviously, a potentially fantastic Settler factory. Which is why I've built up the infrastructure there. Joining a worker or whipping on next growth are both options to speed the Temple.

The save is > here <

Roster

Betazed: Up
Yndy: On Deck
Shevek:
Ted Jackson: Chilling

Good Luck

Ted

1790 BC (Inherited turn) - Sell WM all around for 4 G. Everybody is up MM, Col, Math. Carthage is up Poly too.

1750 BC: Sell WM for 4G. MM Shanghai to produce shields instead of food. We need that temple sooner so that we can bring the cows in range. That way we will grow faster in the long run. Temple goes from 24 to 8 turns.

1725 BC: Sell Wm for 4G total.

1700 BC: Pop hut. Spew barbs. WM for 9G.

IT: What RNG luck! the barb took out our warrior on a hill. :(

1675 BC: ok Carthage is willing to sell Poly now. Ploy from Carthage for WM, 7G/turn and 130G. Ploy to Russia for MM. Ploy to Toku for CoL and 2 G. Poly to baby for Math and 11G.

Net - Poly, MM, CoL and Math for 117, 7G/turn.

Now Carthage is up Currency and Construction, i.e. he is also in a new age. We start Republic in 40 turns.

1650 : WM for 7G.

1625 : WM for 5G

IT: Baby finished TGL. i.e. next turn he will be in a new age.

1600 : WM for 5G. Nanking formed. Everybody apart from Cathy is up Currency and construction and are in a new age. :(

IT: Osman and carthage (I think) starts Sun Tzu. They must have got Feudalism as his free tech.

1550 BC: Shanghai finishes temple. Starts granary. Still emphasizing production.

1525 BC: zzz

1500 BC: Beijing Settler -> Temple (can be vetoed). I have not moved the settler. Next player can decide where to settle.

IMO, we are not doing very good. RCP and distance 5 is too spaced out for Deity where we have to use every tile as soon as possible. It takes eons for our settlers to get to their place. We are also more behind in tech than we should be at this stage. We have only 4 cities.

I am really curious how this one will pan out.

If I did any :smoke: do not hesitate to :whipped:

Got it.

I understand we're not in a very good position for the moment. But I still hope we'll do OK in a short time.

Betazed, the only whipping you deserve is for opening that hut. However I understood that the hill gave you some comfort.

Very nice trade session though.
