Hi there,
I command the mapscript I use to not plot mountains...because I hate them...

The thought occurred to me, however, that I could replace the mountains with a new 'plateau' terrain--you know, like what the Inca's used to live on.

Unfortunately, however, I possess zero graphical skills, hence would someone be willing to create such a sort of terrain? I'd like for it to be raised, but of course not to a peak, unless it's possible to create something that has a visible plateau on the side of a peak. Something that could take mining graphics.

I think that PlanetFall mod has some kind of highland plateau terrain elevation available. You could take a look there and see if that is what you want and try to adapt that.

Are you saying that PlanetFall successfully added a new "PlotType"?
(Normally the game knows only these 4 "elevations": Flatland, Hill, Peak, Ocean.)

Or ar we just talking about changes in "HeightMaps" of e.g. Hills and renaming them?
(Which is possible to do - just a matter of patience fumbling with the "HeightMap" tgas.)

For myself, I'm fine just renaming mountains to something else because the smartmap script allows me to ignore them. Now I can use them as something else.

Sounds like highlands might just be good!

Where are the heightmap tga's in the file structure? I suppose I'll need to copy those over too.

It's this. Hills look different and are renamed to Highlands.
Just want to add:
It's more than just some tiny cosmetic changes. They work different when it comes to movement. You can freely move from Highland to Highland, just like from Flat to Flat, while movement between Flatland and Highland costs extra movement.
Yeah, it would be pretty nice to have a 4th elevation type.

Hmmmm. Ocean is one of the elevations - but it still have 2 terraintypes: Coast and Ocean. Some sailing_units are allowed on coasts only..... There are also differences in what you get from the default terraintypes in fx. food.....

If a new terraintype as fx. plateau was made with Mountains as "master" - just the same way as I guess (guess) Coast is made from Ocean..... wouldn't that work, so some units could move "up on" or "down from" a plateau, work on plateau-tiles, build on plateau-tiles etc. - while the original mountains/peaks were as they are now?

It would take a lot of coding for sure to get such a work-a-round up running. And graphic work too I guess to avoid it to become a useless "flop".

Well I know I'm not even able to make a decent test on that - and I don't know any, who would be willing to use time on that either. So it's just fantasy I guess.
