Hello everyone, I have recently started playing Civilization V, without any "expansions".

It seems that the only way I could win so far was to just choose Gandhi, get Tradition, and just focus on 1 city growth+Cultural Victory. I was playing at King rank and no one(8 players) attacked, it was kind of boring and very easy.

But the other way seems tough. It seems impossible to concentrate on founding more cities with Liberty(or whatever it's called, that gives settlers and stuff) and then surviving attacks as well as focusing on economy. I chose Rome and it was kind of tough to survive until I could reach Communism.

And the diplomacy in this game is good for trading but not for wars. Stronghold Crusader, the simple game which I loved in my childhood had much better war diplomacy. Allies actually could give you military units and also give you free resources as well.

And how to start the game when I not choose Gandhi+1 city culture boom strategy?

This is what I do - Monument+worker+some building+some building+settler(from policy) and etc. I can't wage wars but my economy is always held in high esteem as they mention it to me.

Any tips please?

Ok, here's a very basic one...looking at your build order, always start with at least one, often two, sometimes three scout(s). This is the best way to get ancient ruins, which are vital for giving your empire a very early boost.

As for other strats...too many to mention. Just look at some of the great strategy guides on this forum. If you want to try liberty, a civ like Egypt, Russia, or the Maya might be good to start with.

If you can win so easily with Ghandi, you should be able to do so with others.

Thank you for a response. I thought of making scouts, but problem is - I think it's waste of time to search for ruins in other territories, sometimes other kings are faster to even take a ruin in my own, how can I be faster to take ruins far from my lands? By the time my scouts arrive there, they will be taken already.

With Ghandi it's different because no one seriously attacks you as you aren't founding new cities. And my city has incredibly high defense because of Kremlin and other buildings. So I just focus on social buildings and cultural victory.

I suggest you get Gods & Kings and Brave New World ( expansion packs )

What difficulty are you playing on?

Also, I'd like to mention that India is one of the worst civs to play in Civ V. Try another civ.

I will get those expansions soon I guess.

India is good if you are trying to play culturally and have only 1 city. It goes extremely well if you rush Stonehenge as soon as it becomes available. I played on King level, which is level 6 as I remember.

I'd suggest starting at a lower difficulty and explore the game a bit more if you're completely new to the game.

I have played it for few weeks. As I said, I understand the game, I just don't understand the warfare well yet, because for troops, I have to sacrifice buildings and economy.

You don't nescessarily have to sacrifice buildings or economy. In the early game, build a couple warriors and a couple archers to protect your cities. Keep a sizeable force and the AI won't declare war or mess with you. Once you have a decent defense force, then you can focus on your economy/ science/ culture.

This article right here about the zone of control really helped me to be more efficient with my units.
Also a good beginning tip is to make sure you have an abundance of food, especially in your capitol. The bigger the city grows, the faster you can do everything including research.

I would highly recommend BNW. Cultural victories are much more complex than before and even require some planning, especially at high difficulty levels. Also the AI will not DoW you for breathing on them like they did in Vanilla Civ 5(No Expansions). But the penalties for warmongering are more dramatic.

Yeah, get BNW, it will really enhance your experience

As for getting the scouts out faster, production focus will typically shave off a couple of tturns from scout-building.
When the scouts are out, you can micro the scouts to maximize their sight.

Why do you go Order with OCC CV, Freedom seems like a better choice.
EDIT: Forgot this was vanilla, so no idealogies :p scratch that last thing

You'd be surprised at how bad the AI is at exploration. Building one or two scouts first will often get you quite a few ruins even on higher difficulties where it's only logical that they should find more. Even more important than ruins is the gold and quests from city States and the extra happiness from finding natural wonders. Try to find as many as possible for an early boost to your economy. You'll find with some good early exploration you'll have a much smoother start.

agree re more scouts. Never mind the ruins, you use scouts to find more trading partners and CS's. More CS = more side quests and free stuff.
