Hello, I've just started playing Civilization III. I have one basic question to start out:

Is automating your troops a good thing to do?

Thanks.

Oh yeah, one more thing... is there a way to have your workers build a road from one point to another instead of manually clicking build road on each square?

well...you can't automate your troops...you can automate workers, which i think is generally frowned upon by the civ community, because the AI is stupid about what it improves (i.e. irrigating everywhere). perhaps you mean fortifying? this can be good in order to defend your cities or if there's a specific tile that you really want to hold.

in order to have a road built to a destination, hit ctrl + r and click where you want the road to be build to. if you want to automate your workers to just build roads and connect resources and luxuries, you can do the "automate: build trade" which, i believe, is ctrl + n (but don't quote me on that, check with the manual or specific worker actions toolbar for that)

edit: welcome to civ :)

Oops, my bad, I meant automate workers.

Thanks for the advice, that answers a few of my most basic questions :).

Yea, automating workers is not a good thing to do. Early on while your playing on easier difficulties its fine later on, I suggest manual control of all of them.

Oh BTW welcome, to Civilization 3 and Civfanatics.

Hey welcome to civ u will love it ! :) I automate my workers so i dont have to bother with em ... BUt if they are acting stupid just tell em what to do make sure to build lots of roads :crazyeye:

and dont be afraid to experiment ;) Now go nuke the world =) :egypt:

i used to automate workers when i played on cheiftan. its not so bad on that level and on warlord you can probally get away with it but on regent, which is what i play on, and up it is best to control your workers manually that way you can make sure you get all your cities connected, all your resources connected, all the cities that have slow production have mines by them, and that all the starving cities get irrigation

if i have 100 workers, id probably leave about 10 of them auto, and those just to make rails or something.

I am not that big on micro mangment on workers...i like my turns to go by quick and the last thing i want to do is control those pests, when im in modern age and fighting a big war lol where u have 50 units move every turn and every square must be calculated. :p
