Hellow, Every-one!

I just started using mac, :) switched over from pc .
I need help understanding how to properly download and install version 1.29b2. I tried it once but the computer keep's crashing.
I don't understand mac's all that well and could use a little advice.
Thank's in advance

I looked around the mac section of the fourm's, could find little info.
I know it's here somwhere. I have little time to search and there is a lot of info to cover.
Again thanks in advance:)

Oh by the way, I'm using mac os-9, I'm not sure on any other stats.

Hello :wavey:

Your other post says you are using Mac OS 9, which is a bit like me saying I've switched to a PC and I'm using Windows 98. I am, as it happens, but only because I have an ancient Pentium 200 as a test platform :)

If your Mac is capable of it, I would *strongly* recommend that you upgrade to OS X. Version 10.3.2 is the current release, and it's a wonderful OS, knocks XP into a cocked hat.

Anyway, you didn't come here for a sales pitch. A couple of questions:

1. When you download the 1.29b2 updater, when does the crash happen - during download or during installation? On a Mac these are separate activities.

2. If it happens during download, what browser are you using? My guess is Internet Explorer. What version do you have, and can you download other files OK?

3. If it happens later, what exactly do you do before it crashes, and what do you see up to the moment of the crash?

Thank's for the reply AllanH, I'll do my best to dicribe the problem as it ocured

Ok first of all I downloaded the file ok, then point and drag into the HD2 icon on the desktop under the civIII folder. worked ok! I started a game. somtime during the middle of the dark ages my system crashed, this happend 3 times.
all saves, autosave and all where gone when I rebooted the system. on startup the second time my mac did somthing like a system check for/on the HD1 portion because the system was shut down improperly. I then trashed the entire civIII folder and reinstalled from disk so I could at least play the game.
As for my browser I'm not sure, the desktop icon is a globe with hand pointing and says browse internet undernth it
I don't yet understand how mac's work so this is the best I can do for now.
again thanks for taking the time to help here

I don't think anything really "worked" if you just dragged the file icon onto the HD2 icon. All you did was move the file onto the top level of that hard drive. It sounds like you have two hard drives, or two hard drive partitions.

What is the downloaded file called? If it has ".zip" on the end of its name then you first need to expand it by double clicking it. If you expand this file, or if it's already expanded, you should have an installer, probably called "Civ3 1.29b2 Installer", and with an icon that looks like this:
InstallerIcon.jpg

You then need to double click that installer to run it, and it will ask you which Civ3 folder to upgrade. As you probably only have one, you can just select that and it should do its thing.

I really don't know how the system could have lost all your saves. That's a mystery, but I've almost never played the original unpatched CD version, and certainly never played Civ3 on Mac OS 9, so I'll take your word for it! You really need to get that 1.29b2 patch installed.

When you have a browser window open, click on the Apple icon at the top left corner of the screen and the "About ..." menu item should include the title of the browser. Selecting that menu item will give you a screen showing the full name and version of the browser software. I'm pretty sure it will be Internet Explorer, though, as that's the default browser in OS 9. In any case it's not relevant to this problem as the file is downloading OK so the web browser has done its job.

If you click the Apple menu icon when the Finder (the file system) is the frontmost application you should see an application called Apple System Profiler. If you run that it will tell you all you need to know about the speed and CPU of your Mac, the memory and disk capacities and so on. I strongly recommend you let us know what it says, and we can advise on whether it could run OS X.

Sorry I took so long to respond, I'v had the flu all week,:( been to sik to do anything. feeling better now altho still a little sick.

Anyway Here's The Info. :)
Finder:9.0
System:9.0 us
Active enabler: PowerPC Enabler 9.0.4
Quick time : 6.0.2
multiusers:1.1
disk cache:7.96mb
virtual memory:500mb
built in menory:256mb
vid memory 16mb
power mac g4
processor info: PowerPC g4
machine speeed: 450 MHz
thank's for all the help the download worked, altho I'm still having some problems with it .:(

Sorry to hear about your flu, I hope you feel better soon.

Well, congratulations, you have a PowerMac G4 running at 450 MHz, which is 30% faster than the 350 MHz one I'm sitting at now and it's well capable of running Panther. It has 256 MBytes of RAM, which is a OK to run OS X, though you'd get more performance if you added some more RAM and it's dirt cheap these days. I have 1.12 GBytes.

If you are happy with OS 9, or you're stuck with legacy software that won't run on X then OK, but you really don't know what you are missing. Panther is as stable as a rock, runs all Apple's latest toys, and looks beautiful.

Thanks for the quick responsel
I have a few more questions.

first. I see in one of your posts in the macintosh Tech Game support/ Game FAQ You mention somthing about VirtualPC that one can install it there and grab the files it creates and copy them via network or desk top or CD-R to one's Mac. I have a program I noticed when I double clicked the apple icon called windows 98 is this conected to virtualPC in some way?
I was wondering because I have PTW disk for my PC " PICE OF CRAP" if this is the case that would be really cool.

I read somwhere that I could download DYP scenario if I had 1.29b2. is this true, do you know? I understand I can only download civIII bic files witch I havent tride yet, I will soon as I'm done here.

I will check into osx upgrade soon as posable I would love to have access to the editor.

I don't know what the "Windows 98" reference in the Apple menu is. What happens if you select it? I assume you have bought this Mac second hand, or inherited it, and it came with some software already installed? Virtual PC is a PC emulator. If you have it properly installed on your Mac then you can run PC software using it. It won't run PTW very satisfactorily, as the emulated performance would be considerably worse than my Pentium 200, but you could use it to run .exe installers to extract mod files, and you may be able to run some of the PC utilities to examine and edit Civ3 files.

If you still have your PC you might as well use that. You could network the Mac and the PC using a crossover ethernet cable, and with OS X you can run Windows sharing to exchange files between them. OS 9 would require third party software to enable file sharing. CD-R or a USB removable memory device is the other alternative if you have the right hardware.

I've never tried DyP. I see that it's 1.29 compatible, so I'll download the .exe to my PeeCee, and see what it installs. I'll report back.

I downoaded DyP and ran the .exe on my PC to expand it into a dummy Civ3 folder. I could have installed it from the PC straight into a Mac Civ3 folder via the network, but I wanted to check on the file structure it creates. I then used my drag and drop installer to add the files to a clean copy of 1.29b2 and ran it. I've played a few turns and all seems OK so far, and when I opened up F6 and looked at the tech tree, all I can say is - WOW! Someone's been very busy.

Yes I tryed that it is the vertual PC. It oppend up sudo-version of windows 98 witch I will try installing windows civIII to try the editor, but I'm still not sure about how to switch that to Mac OS version I'll play aroud with that when I'v got the time.

Every PC I'v ever owned took a crap on me since windows 95 and now I'm prejudic!! my pice of crap here was pentiun4 2.0GHz processor 512MB sds sdr ram and 80 Gig hard drive with win XP, it worked for about 13 months and the mother bord decided it was done with the device drivers and simultaniously the grafics card took a crap, that was after it decided to wipe out my hard twice. I did a full recovery each time.

I'm still checking on the upgrade. I will upgrade if I can but the only Mac store in Alaska opens late and closes early so I need to wait for a day I have time before I can check on it.

Yes I thik DYP is verry cool, did you play the whole game or are you still playing?

If the full VirtualPC is installed, with an extra piece that used to need to be installed separately from the CD, then you can drag files from the imitation PC desktop to the Mac desktop to copy them. You can also configure shared virtual disks. You create a folder somewhere on the Mac and then in the VirtualPC settings you can make that drive D: or whatever and both OSs can read and write it.

Apple sell Panther online - $129 last time I looked. I assume they can deliver in Alaska.

No, I shelved it as I'm really trying hard to find time to play the GOTM this time around, and DyP needs a lot of time to understand.

Oh yah by the way, I sort of bought, and inherited this computer it's quite complicated one of those things y'a know. But I do like it.

Ok I had some time today to check on the Mac store they also sell panther for $129 I hope this week I'll be-able to upgrade and I'll ask them about my ram, they sell 512MB for $159.

Could I possibly talk you into somhow sending me a donloadable copy of DYP that would work on my Mac? Please. My email dose not work right now so you would have to PM me or post it here if that's possable. Either way yah or nay is cool, I'm just a civ fanatic and would be happy with just plain civIII.

Once again AlanH thank you verry much for all your help and time, I truly do greatly apreciate it, I would not understand all I do now without it. Now I'm more technologicly advanced .

There's a challenge! The DyP download is almost 60 MBytes, so it's way too big to upload here, and my ISP web space is 20 MBytes max.

Why don't you ask the DyP people nicely if they would provide the unbundles file set as a zip file on their site? Alternatively you'll have to download and install it in VirtualPC, transferring it between VirtualPC and the Mac OS via a virtual shared disk as I described.

PS $159 sounds a tad high for 512MBytes. Check out Crucial's pricing online before you hand over your hard earned dollars. Of course, you may lose the difference on shipping costs to the far end of the known universe ;)

I have two more question
I'v finaly worked out the bugs in 1.29b2 , stuff like saving the game every 8-10 turns then reloading so I don't lose 12 turns worth of play. I already don't have enuph playtime as it is.

anyway my question is: How can one move units in a stack? I can't seem to figure this out is there somwhere I can learn the control comands for 1.29b2?

I chose to post in this thred so as t save suerffer time and not bung up the Mac fourm section with extra threds, mostly cause I'm having a hard time finding what I need in this, the Mac forum. Actulay somone should sugest itemising this forum for easer navigation, of all Mac users so people could find info faster and easer, and with minimum hassal. Actualy if I get time (witch I may here in the next couple of days) I may sugest this very thing with a poll to find out what people think.:)

You shouldn't need to do that. 1.29b2 is stable here. If you do have crashes then I would hazard a guess that your system is unstable, not specifically Civ3.

I assume you have Autosave enabled? That saves every turn, and keeps the four or five previous saves. It allows you to go back one or two turns and reload if you crash. If you are saving manually every few turns you don't need to reload from the save, just carry on playing. Again, if you are findng that quitting and reloading that often is needed to prevent crashes then there's something else wrong.

Use J instead of G and click on the destination to move all units of the same type in a stack. Someone has said that you can use Shift-J to move all the units in a stack regardless of type, but I've never needed to use it, so I don't know if it works.

Health warning: Stack move orders can be dangerous. Units will immediately move as far as they can (maybe nowhere), and then remember their move orders when they run out of movement points and continue on the next turn. If a stack contains units with different remaining movement you might split your stack leaving some units exposed. Telling a stack of workers to move when some of them are still working means the rest will finish their current job next turn and start off in the requested direction. You might not want that.

Every now and then Thunderfall, the webmaster, tries tourning on the Search facility again. Each time he does the server hangs. So we're stuck with no search :(

This forum is really very quiet, so there aren't so many posts you need to find. I'm not sure I can see a need for much subdivision, what did you have in mind? I'll watch your poll with interest.

Note that most questions you might ask about the game can also be answered in the main forums, by a much larger audience. The Mac version has one or two small differences, but not many, as it's mostly the same code as the WIndows product. You'll find that the Control key is often replaced by the Command key for a shortcut (the Apple/four-leaf-clover key nest to the Space bar), but these are easy things to work out.

If you are still reading these posts, I've recently discovered that the DyP installer can be unzipped by Stuffit Expander, at least versions 7 and 8. Once unzipped you can install the files into a copy of civ3 version 1.29b2 and play the mod.
