Just jumped into the Multiplayer option, and can't find anyone else to play. The lobby looks empty. Is this pretty normal? I just hit "Host Game."

Hi! Welcome to Multiplayer. The lobbies are region generated. So its possible your region may be low on gamers during certain hours.

Suggestions: Switch to New York region in your steam. More players there I believe. OR join the MP league im in. Link below.

Good luck with MP Dont give up if you get throttled first few games.

Ok I joined your league. Once I figure out how to switch to NY (I live in KS) I'll jump in to play some and try out MP. Any specifics on how to get league games?

I found it. Not impressed with MP. Players can sometimes move twice before you move once. That seems fundamentally unfair and obviously so. Think I'll stick to SP. Thanks though =)

No simultaneous turns as well...sry but speed is a big thing to learn for multi.

Yeah, I suppose I'll give it some more tries. Better than playing the computer at least. It really should just be turn based with shorter timers though, imo.

Thats a big can of worms, but I think most players who get used to simul like it. Id rather be able to react to what they are doing when they are doing it anyway. Can only do that during simul turns, turn based would make you feel like when your getting womped because you ended your turn too soon.

This exact same problem happens with the simultaneous moves, since you are always encouraged to wait as long as you can to end your turn so that you can not be surprised by enemy action. If you are that enemy, you are still encouraged to wait so that you can attack at the end of a turn and then do another attack right at the beginning of the following turn.

I'd be far happier if Civ V multi-player wasn't a game about having fast reaction times, since I can play a real RTS-style product for that.

Make sure you check out our Steam chat room, it is much better for organizing games than the in game server list.

Steam lets player host and have other players click on their name in a player list, and click Join game, this is by far the best option with an international game and bypasses the regional games lists.
