I'm new to Civilization. I was inspired to get it from a friend at work who loves the series dearly. Similar games I've played have been Age of Empires 1-3, Populous on the Amiga, and the SimCity games.

I recently bought the Civilization Chronicles for a great price brand new, because I wanted to collect all of the games. Civ4 really looked interesting to me, but I wanted to start with the original and get the feel for the game. Later, I intend to progress through the sequals.

So, I'm playing Civ1 for Windows and having fun. I'm glad I started with the original. I am having trouble with my civilization always running out of money, though. Even with taxes high, I'm running out of money, losing city walls, and other things I spent time building. I thought building more cities would help, but it didn't. Do I need to spend more time "mining" several different types of squares? I was only mining around mountains.

Thanks for the help.

By the way, how come CivNet was not included in Civ Chronicles? That would have been a good addition. I would have loved to seen Alpha Centari and a few of the other Civ games in this collection too.

Taxes come from trade (arrows), not production (shields); arrows appear by default on ocean and river tiles and with roads on desert, plains, and grasslands. Someone will probably chime in with an opposing viewpoint, but structures are generally not worth it, especially in the early going.

Whelkman is right. It seems to me that you are building too much city improvements. Each city improvement has a maintenance cost attached. A large sum of maintenance costs contribute to shorten your treasury turn after turn. City Walls are among the most expensive structures. As a general rule, don't build it unless a city is facing a serious threat - and even in this case maybe you should invest your time and money in strong attacking units for defending the city.

Government type is also an important feature. Have you upgraded your government from Despotism to Republic, Democracy, or even Monarchy?

I also agree, having different buildings does have a maintenance cost. Later on in the game it is okay so start "selling" off some of these buildings, depending on your government For example:

City Walls, Granary, Colosseum etc.

It really depends on the city. If there are some with some upset citizens, a Colosseum helps. If there is no civil unrest, I been able to do without. Though it does affect how the city grows at certain points, but you don't have to have certain structures all the time. Granary's really help starting cities, but are pretty useless when the city grows larger (6-8 or so, depending on speed of growth)
