Next on the History Channel:

See part two of the critically acclaimed series: FANATICA AT WAR with your host, the deep-voiced narrator guy.

[Cue ominous music and a map of the world circa 1816]

The fronts that Fanatica fought were many. But for the green-waving flags of the hapless and, for the most part, useless Zulus, United Fanatica was fighting a new brand of World War: They against the World.

The Romans were relentless and refused to give any ground on the Island of Viroconium. The English held sway in the Province of Europa and their ships guarded their waters jealously. The Germans were an ominous presence to the newly converted people of Heidelberg. And the Mongols, well, they were the targets.

[Cue narrator in front of the city of Karakorum]

The epicenter it was called. This fair city that seems so peaceful now was the bullseye that would win Fanatica the cricket game that was the world war. Here, the Mongol palace once flew the purple flag of its country proudly, but often upside down. They were not a bright bunch, but they felt safe behind the city walls of their city. The Fanatics had established two fronts on their mainland, and were approaching from two directions, but still the Mongols did not see their doom.

So join us tonight as we explore the events that led to the taking of this city in part two of our series: FANATICA AT WAR: Part II – The Mongol Palace.

[Cue starting titles and music. Cut to commercials promoting upcoming History Channel event: The Life and Women of the duke o’ york. Actually, only a miniseries]

[Back to 1816 map]

1816:

With the Grand Summit of 1816, the Inner Circle set in motion a great deal of newer orders. Many production lines were changed in cities across the nation, and the advent of luxuries was set at 10% with 40% taxes and 50% science. A great deal was scheduled for the bright minds at Newton University, and they would not disappoint.

The coffers of Fanatica had recovered from the rushing of the Hoover Dam and the bribing of Heidelberg (slap), and there was enough coming in that president Kev was able to institute some additional rush buying.

Internationally, the German government was overthrown, giving a small respite to the people of Heidelberg (slap). The Mongols backed off from the newly taken city of Aleppo as well, but still many forces remained. While there was some peace in the world now, it would not last long.

1818:

[Cue to aerial shot of Newton University]

Automobile. Combustion led in this year to the discovery of internal combustion and the advent of automobiles was attained in United Fanatica. Fanatica was now viewed with even more jealousy as other nations were forced to travel with camels and horses while the Fanatics hogged the roads with their FMW’s (Fanatica Motor Wheels) and spooked their mounts. This technology, however, also led to the possibility of building the most fearsome creature of the seas – the battleship. To be sure that many could be built, the scientists began to study mass production.

Much was built in this year across Fanatica.
Engineers, trained at Spice Haven, began some improvements while the city began a harbor.
Unknown City finished its factory and began to train engineers
Spycatcher built a bank and made some people happy. It then started an Offshore Platform
Kashgar built a new temple and began to train engineers
Bejing trained a spy and started training engineers
Fort Pornstar built a sewer and began the first battleship
Olympia gathered a beads caravan and also began a battleship

Fanatica had issues on the Dover continent in this year with the English. A cannon battalion was approaching fast, and the cavalry in Brighton was forced to engage. A successful mission, but the English got what they wanted as the Mongols and Romans were forced to declare war on the Fanatics.

[Cue to Livia and Genghis meeting with Henry and signing a contract. Genghis signs with an “X”]

The first cruiser-class ship was built in 1818 in Joespaniel (which then began a bank). The UFS Spice was launched and began to head for Mongol waters. On the Mongol mainland, the cavalry of Fanatica now numbered 8. They sallied forth from Aleppo to clear the land around the city from the Mongol presence and stench. Among the dead were 2 fanatics, 2 partisans, a settler, and engineer and a cannon. Much of the force went back to the city, but the healthy ones began to fortify the nearby fortress with greater numbers. A check on the city of Samarkand showed the spies that there were three defenders in the city with no city walls.

Beautiful Potopolia gems were delivered to Xinjian around this time, netting the Fanatics 120 gold.

A transport arrived in Canton and would deliver some cavalry and a spy to Heidelberg. General Ren wished to shore up his hold here, and it would soon prove invaluable.

[Cue narrator outside of lovely coastal city]

Recognize this city. Well, here in the province of Triton, the former Chinese cities were hoping they could earn a governor to watch over their cities. They knew that Governor Elibb was watching over nearby Europa Province, and so they built a new city and named it after the governor. That’s right, Elibbia was built in this year in Triton Province. As we all know, it soon became a very important city for commerce with all of the fishing and whaling.

To the north and east of these goings-on, an exploring engineer corps was headed by a Fanatica Citizen known in the history books as Civ-1 Addict for reasons unknown. With a very fruitful place to settle, the engineers cheered their leader on to allow them to build a city. The cry of AD-DICT-A, AD-DICT-A went up, and the city of Addicta was born. A small village was seen in this new city’s radius. What would it hold?

In international happenings, the Romans attacked Heidelberg with cavalry and failed. They also ruined roads near Brundisium and Lutetia. The Inner Circle vowed revenge.

1820:

Attack of the cav. A roving band of Fanatica cavalry accidentally bumped into three bands of Mongol cavalry. The Fanatica cavalry, taking the Mongols by surprise, crushed all three, dealing Genghis a serious blow. Healthy cavalry were still entering the fort at this time, waiting for the attack they all knew would come on Samarkand.

The village near Addicta was filled with local warriors that were rifle-proficient. They were persuaded to join the city of Addicta - who decided to start training engineers.

Dastardly deeds. The Romans further incited the Fanatics in this year as they mercilessly killed a whole corps of defenseless engineers.

1822:

[Cue narrator in front of Lutetia]

In 1822, Lutetia built these city walls that still stand today. Fearful of an attack at sea by the Romans, they began the coastal fortress right after. Though it seemed as if Fanatica had control of Viroconium Island, there seemed to be no end to the Roman troops sent to harass and pillage. Perhaps they were not as alone on this island as they thought.

Mass Production became a reality in 1822 as well, and the scientists, with their polyester shirts, taped glasses, and pocket protectors had begun to oil their hair after using it to discover automobile. With mass production, there would now be no shortage of nifty calculators and watches with timers. General Ren, however, needed something soon to break the various enemies, and the scientists set to researching Mobile Warfare.

A look at the German capital by the spy on the transport from Canton showed the IC that there were two rifles and alpine troops defending the capital. Not much, but the city walls could be a problem. In fact, it was beginning to seem that all of the German cities were building city walls.

The UFS Spice crushed a Mongol Destroyer attempting to block it from reaching Mongol waters. The cruiser was given a veteran status for its valor.

At Lutetia, Alpine troops beat a Roman cannon division into submission with their skis. The annoying Roman partisan group went down as well thanks to the cavalry nearby. It was assumed that these were the ones responsible for killing the engineers. In a fit of solidarity, the scientists beat the partisans to death with mechanical pencils and poked them with their compasses.

One of the first meetings between the IC and Frederick of the Germans took place in Olympia. It was called by the Inner Circle and meant to bring a peace as the Fanatica transport in German waters was unescorted.

[Cue reenactment with IC and Frederick]

Kev: Welcome to our Inner Sanctum. Need a beer? Don’t cost nothin’.
Fred: Bah! Zis bier est like weasel urine compared to our own brau. (Drinks anyway)
Ren: Here, let me help you drink it… (he is restrained by Dell)
Fred: Vat is it that you vant wis me, Fanatica?
duke: Ve… I mean WE wish to have peace in our day and want our Fanatica children to play all day long with the German children while birds sing and all are happy
Fred: Acht! That silver tongue is zo convinzing. I vill agree.
IC: YAY FREDDIE!
Fred: Now smiling drunkenly. Leaves.
IC: Uncontrolled laughter as duke collects bets from people who were convinced he could never say what he did with a straight face.

Lovely Athenae gems reached Tsingtao at this time and gave the Fanatics 176 gold.

A strange attack came in this year – from an unexpected source. A frigate flying a red flag approached the city of Tabriz – the first Mongol city taken on the mainland. Dragoons, calling the strange name Atilla, landed time and again and attacked the city without stop. Four dragoon contingents landed, and by the time all was done, BOTH defending rifle units in the city were killed. However, the dragoons could not enter as they were still wounded.

Internationally, tech trading took the stage in 1822.

Zulus got electricity from the Romans
English got Steel from the Romans
Zulus got Metallurgy from the Romans
Zulus got Feudalism from the Mongols

1824:

Pellaken Bay built a market and started engineers
Tabriz built a market and started rifles
Dreadtown built a harbor and started a bank

A Fanatica destroyer crushed the barbarian forces and ship near Tabriz. Extra defenders entered the city to help, but the threat was no more.

Mpondo wine was delivered to Canton and earned 190 gold. The coffers of Fanatica were now filled with 2764 gold, and some rush-buying ensued.

1824 saw the battle of Samarkand. Fanatica had enough healed cavalry to attack, and attack they did. Without losing a single brigade, the Fanatics took the city, 255 gold, and kept the coastal fortress and coliseum intact. Genghis now made his typical visit:

Genghis: Hello Ren, sir
Ren: SIT
Genghis: (sitting). Me know me was bad. Can we have peace again?
Ren: ROLL OVER
Genghis: (Rolling). Me very sorry.
Ren: LAY DOWN
Genghis: (Laying Down). How’s about it?
Ren: OK. GO HOME.
Genghis: (Leaves)

The city of Karakorum was in sight.

The transport from Canton spotted Munich. Four defenders and city walls would be tough.

Internationally, the Zulus and English declared peace. Hmm, Fanatica was left at war with the English. A peace was later set.

The Romans navy began to flex a bit in this year, sailing very close to Fanatica shores.

A MONGOL cannon was spotted near Lutetia. MONGOL? HERE? Nicely enough, a transport from Lutetia had been heading to Olympia to pick up engineers and freight. Perhaps something can be spotted.

1826:

Much was built. The list:

Renmark built a temple and started a marketplace
Spice Haven built a harbor and began engineers (replacing the ones killed)
Kashgar built engineers and started an aqueduct
Athenae built sewers and started a factory
Bakhara built a marketplace and started engineers
Potopolia built sewers and started a factory
THDP built superhighways and started a bank. THDP was doing well.
Heidelberg trained additional alpine troops and begins a temple.

Karakorum had five defenders behind city walls. Even with a cruiser nearby, some help will probably be needed here.

The Mongol city of Khorasan was spotted on Viroconium Island.

Perhaps the help was now available.

In this year, the UFS Marlbrough and the UFS Dell were built in Fort Pornstar and Olympia. Huge battleships, the terror of the seas. They both began their trek toward the Mongol capital. The UFS Spice was docked outside the city and barred any entrance or exit. Just needed some time before taking the city – would they get it?

A look at Lugdunum showed that there is only a single rifle in defense and no city walls. The transport was near as well.

1828:

[Cue narrator outside of Lugdunum]

It was here in Lugdunum that the Germans and Romans met to sign their treaty against United Fanatica. Fitting, as it was a Roman city on a German island. It was also a source of concern for the Fanatics in 1828 as they continued to try to protect Heidelberg (slap). Poorly defended, it was also an easy target when 3 veteran cavalry arrived.

The first cavalry unit attacked Roman cavalry and cannons to clear the way. The second made very sort work of the feeble rifle contingent in the city. The third cavalry marched into the city unopposed. The city of Lugdunum was now Fanatica property along with 124 gold and a Coliseum. A partisan was bribed for defense, and Livia came for a visit.

Livia: Um, hi. I see you have Lugdunum there, huh. Guess I should have defended it better.
Lecherous looks at Livia’s breasts
Livia: (trying to cover) Um, well, since you have a city of mine, maybe you could give me the secret of automobile. Those camels suck..
Lecherous looks.
Livia: Of course, I’ll settle for peace. Is there anything else I can do?
HUGE lecherous smiles
Livia: Well, gotta go. Bye.

Becka-Becka and Kevholm offshore platforms were built and both island cities started aqueducts while Unknown City trained engineers and started a battleship.

On the English continent, the IC didn’t know what to do with all of their money. They decided to go city shopping and sent Governor Elibb on the task.

Elibb: Hi people of Oxford (POO). I have a lot of cash on me.
POO: Mmmmmm…. Money
Elibb: Hey, I have an idea. You have a city, I have gold.
POO: Mmmmmmm…. Gold
Elibb: Right, hey we can make a fair trade.
POO: Mmmmmm…. Trade
Elibb: Hows about 700 gold.
POO: WooHoo! 700?!?! See Ya, Sucker.

Oxford was now Fanatica’s along with 90 gold and 3 defenders. Elibb returned to Brighton.

In this year, the brilliance of Fanatica shone through. Mobile warfare was discovered and mighty armored steeds were considered. The weary scientists only give three choices for their next endeavor:

Amphibious Warfare
Recycling
Flight

Duke had a plan. He knew that the English were studying Amphibious Warfare, and if they discovered it soon….

Brilliant plan, Fanatica went for Amphibious Warfare and hoped.

Internationally, dire occurrences. The Mongols performed a sneak attack. A cannon destroyed a defender at Samarkand and a fanatic attack was turned away. In a fit of cowardice, a Mongol destroyer killed an engineer corps that was just about to build a city in a great spot on a small island off the main coast (yes, THAT spot). Bastards.

1830:

[Cue narrator on the fields of Samarkand]

Revenge took place here. There were seven healthy, veteran cavalry ready to do battle in Samarkand. Eager as well after the Mongol atrocity. There are those that say the soil here is still red with the stain of Mongol blood that spilled here in this year. In all, 2 cannon brigades, 2 fanatics, 2 rifles, 3 partisans, and 1 cavalry were all destroyed here. Further, the cruiser UFS Spice sank two Mongol destroyers – though badly damaged. Nothing would stop the Fanatics now from taking the capital.

Alpine troops were stationed at Samarkand and more were on the way.

Internationally, the English had become fundamentalist under their Lord and Protector, Henry. They had just discovered Amphibious Warfare.

A Mongol destroyer attacked the damaged UFS Spice, but the cruiser held on and sank their attackers instead. However, a different destroyer killed another engineer. Did they have no shame?

1832:

Basra trained a spy and started on more eingineers
Joespaniel built a bank and began freight
Viroconium trained engineers and started an aqueduct

A Mongol cavalry was seen outside of Samarkand, and it would have cost 3,382 to bribe. It was killed instead, but the cavalry was now vulnerable.

The Duke Science Plan was put into good use. The spy of Brighton took Amphibious Warfare and the English didn’t sense a thing. The Fanatics decided to go for computers.

There was a great unhappiness in the world with so much war. It was decided to increase luxuries to 20% and lower taxes by 10%. The result was that only a single entertainer was needed throughout the empire – in Fort Pornstar where a bank was then rushed. The profit was 345 gold and 3 turns to new techs.

The Germans overthrew their government.

The dastardly Mongols kill our cavalry in the field.

1834:

Sixchan built and offshore platform and began a sewer
Spycatcher built an offshore platform and started a factory
Aleppo built a temple and started a harbor. The people there were glad to be Fanatics
Fort Pornstar built a bank and started freight. No entertainers were needed anywhere.

Computers were discovered in this year in THDP. Pong was a hit, and games simulating civilization-building threatened to addict a nation. The choices for new techs included Atomic Theory, Guerilla Warfare, Recycling, and Refrigeration. Refrigeration was chosen, and the scientists used the keg refrigerator as a template.

Oil from Athenae reached Frankfurt and 805 gold was earned!! NICE! The spice freight would then check out the northern portion of the Roman island for customers (and new cities as well).

Fanatic revenge is taken on the Mongol cavalry, but a search by the spy in Samarkand sees that a new cavalry is about to finish in Karakorum. The battleships were still a short distance away, and the Spice could not help with its damage. The decision was made, and the brave spy attempted to sabotage the city walls of Karakorum. She was successful, but was captured, tortured and killed. Her efforts will always be remembered. The attack will come in 1836.

Internationally, the Mongol cav out of Karakorum hit the lingering Fanatica cavalry outside of Samarkand.

Also, the Germans were now a republic. That meant buyable.

1836:

Olympia and Beijing built mass transit. Beijing started a barracks while Olympia started an effort to contact life on other worlds called SETI

[Cue to narrator at a burned out spot on Karakorum soil]

This is where the palace once stood here is Karakorum. Now, we Fanatics refuse to build upon it in remembrance of those who fought and died to take the first Mongol capital.

It was a bloody battle. The UFS Marlbrough reached the city in time to participate and killed alpine troops and fanatics while earning veteran status. The UFS Dell was behind, and not to be left out attacked Kabul and killed fanatics there.

The ground troops then attacked the city proper. Only a rifle contingent and partisans remained and were crushed beneath. Other units were killed in the field as well before the taking of the city, but finally, a veteran cavalry entered the city and it was in Fanatica’s hands.

The tricky Mongols, however, moved their capital to Nishapur – a non-coastal city.

The Fanatics earned 307 gold and retained the city’s aqueduct and market. Historians note that they believed this city to be the site of the ancient Oracle as well.

Again, the Mongols call:

Genghis: Battle fun.
Ren: Down. Bad Khan (cracks whip)
Genghis: Me thought you WANTED sneaky attack
Ren: No, we’ll attack when we’re ready.
Genghis: OH. Me see. I go ‘way now.
Ren: I hate this breed.

Peace.

With nothing happening internationally, the traditional IC party took place. Dell once again impressed everyone with his Karaoke abilities. He sang the entire long version of “American Pie” by Don McClean and then made the entire IC cry with his beautiful rendition of “Cats in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin.

1838:

Our saga continues.
Cambridge built a coastal fortress and started a harbor
Marl Downs built an offshore platform and started an aqueduct
Dover built an aqueduct and started a spy
Joespaniel found oil and loaded it into a truck. It began an offshore platform
Fort Pornstar made a nice Chardonnay and loaded it into a truck. It started a library.
Hippoville built a bank and started Hippo University.

The Roman cities of Hisplas and Neapolis are found. Neapolis demanded silk from Kevholm and this earned the Fanatics 498 gold.

The coffers were now at 3,532 gold and 22,000,000 citizens. The inertia of Fanatica was becoming too great for any to stop.

Internationally, three English ironclads attacked Cambridge. The brand new coastal fortress held up great. With this sneak attack, the plucky Zulus come to the “aid” of Fanatica and declared war on the English.

Trading:

Zulus got Econ from Rome
Rome got AW from English
Mongols got AW from Rome
Zulus got AW from Rome
Zulus got Magnetism from Mongols
Germans got AW from Rome

1840:

Brighton built a market and started a spy
Oxford trained a spy and started a temple
Bokhara trained engineers and started a temple
THDP built a bank and started a supermarket
Beijing built a barracks and started a tank

A wonderful thing happened in this year. THDP was so happy that it held a “We Love the President” Parade. With 20% luxuries!

Spies saw that Nishapur now had city walls. The IC was unhappy. To cheer themselves up, they bought Leeds for 900 gold. They got 87 gold back and 4 defenders with a barracks, granary, market and a bank. The English called for peace, and Elibb met:

Hank: Hello, mate. Like some tea?
Elibb: What’s up Hank?
Hank: I’d love to have peace, ol’ boy, but I need mobile warfare.
Elibb: You need my foot in you’re a**
Hank: Right, well maybe not then. How about a bit of peace then?
Elibb: Get your cricket-playing butt outta my province.
Hank: I’ll be going now. Cheers.
Elibb: Dork.

A spy and transport team, looking for new lands, found and island. However, this island was already claimed by the English and the city of Birmingham was spotted.

Internationally, the Zulus announce that they lost the city of Tugela to the English. The IC thinks they should help out their cute little allies.

The Mongols obtained steel from the Romans. Mongol cruisers could be bad (Kev slaps head).

Rome discovered guerilla warfare.

1842:

The last stop for this part of FANATICA AT WAR

St. Leowind built a Market and started a temple. The temple will be rushed so this city can celebrate soon.
Spice Haven trained engineers and began a factory
Becka-Becka and Kevholm each completed aqueducts and began marketplaces.
Samarkand trained a spy and began to train another
Shanghai built a factory and started a barracks
Dreadtown built a bank and started freight

In 1842 Robotics was discovered, and a deadly weapon that would ignore city walls in general was conceived. This was certainly a serious turning point for United Fanatica. New techs were Atomic Theory, Guerilla Warfare and Flight. Atomic Theory was chosen as Duke had a fear of flying – or thought he might if it was invented.

[Cue to narrator outside of Nishapur]

The new target for Fanatica. The city of Nishapur was well inland and out of reach of the Fanatica navy. It was guarded by city walls and well defended. A spy was sent to confirm all of this, and then stuck with nothing to really do. It still could move, but what would be its choice.

Join us next time to find out.

That does it for part two of FANATICA AT WAR. This is the voice-over narrator saying good night Fanatica.

From the UN:

Rome = 60 techs and researching combustion. A republic with 1,989 gold and 10 cities.

Zululand = 51 techs and researching Refrigeration. A republic with 1,036 gold and 6 cities

Germans = 59 techs and reseraching guerilla warfare. A republic with 583 gold and 5 cities.

English = 58 techs and researching Theory of Gravity. A fundy with 2,449 gold and 16 cities.

Mongols = 56 techs and researching refining. A fundy with 1,642 gold and 9 cities (left).

United Fanatica = 70 techs and researching Atomic Theory. A democracy with 2,852 gold and 49 cities.

That lonely frigate is no concern IMO. What does bother me is that they show interest in our territorial waters and have access to cruisers. Our cities in that area (ie Dellville and Spicehaven) are defended by non-vet riflemen and lack both coastal fortresses and city walls. This means they are vulnerable to attack from both cruisers and cavarly.

Since there are no longer any roman cities on viroconium island, they have to attack us from the sea from now on. In my experinece the AI has a tendece to perform seaborn invasion rather randomly, meaning they won´t necessary take place at the closest spot (brundisium, dukeshire). The fact that they show interest in the Dellville/Spice Haven area makes me wonder if they will attack here soon. Thus I think we should send a battleship here to protect our territory. :)

If the Romans continue to threaten the area then the president can quickly rush build a coastal fortress and walls...

Good idea, Dell. But IMO we should clear the are nevertheless, if only to allow our engineers to work in peace.

I'd like to see some battleships cruising around just killing every ship with the intention of coming our way. If the AI is cruising around they are not there for fun....

Yes. That's my point. The frigate itself doesn't bother me since its empty, but the fact that it is there at all concerns me. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more ships on the way since the AI usually sends its navy to one spot it wants to attack.

We need to get some defenses built up and/or some sea units over there to 'discourage' any more ships from coming through the heart of our territory.

Not to alarm anyone, but there have been other Roman ships spotted in this area as well. A few ironclads, a few destroyers, and even a transport (though it was empty at the time)

I fully expect to send some ships to the area to be sure we have a naval presence there.
