New Unit--Chinese Junk

I saw that program as well, and it's on my list. The chinese are my fav. civ to play as, so once I get finished with a few ww2 units, I'll be back to making units for my beloved chinese :D And after that, I think I'm gonna actually sit down and play a full game with my units. :)

I'm going to patch this one up a bit, make the transition smoother when it goes from one flic to the other, and then maybe this junk could be one for the ancient age, to replace the galley with that superjunk being more a contemporary of the galleon or frigate. Though I believe those superjunks were in thier hayday, according to that program in the Han dynasty. I always thought it was the Ming who really launched oceanic exploration, and it alltogether proved unprofitable, which is why the chinese gave it up. In any event, that painting of the superjunks looked really cool!

Here are some words for your civilopedia if you want them

#PRTO_Junk
^
^
^The [Junk] is a sea-going vessel that may safely traverse $LINK<coast=TERR_Coast> and $LINK<sea=TERR_Sea> squares.
If it ends a turn in an $LINK<ocean=TERR_Ocean> square, it is in danger of sinking.

^
^
^At about the same time as the development of the later $LINK<Galleys=PRTO_Galley>, the Chinese developed one of the strongest and most seaworthy vessels in existence: the junk, which is still used by the peoples of South East Asia.
^
^Essentially a large, light flat-bottomed box, the junk lacks three components elsewhere regarded as fundamental to ships:
the keel, and the stem- and sternposts (upright members at bow and stern). The prow, which is the front of the
ship, is broad and flat rather than pointed. The bottom of the boat is flat or has only a small keel,
and the rudder is long. The vessel has a high poop deck. (A poop deck is a partial deck at the rear of the boat
above the main deck.) Junks have high masts, most commonly three, with four-cornered, coarse cotton sails,
called lugsails, braced flat by bamboo strips or battens. Long oars may also be used on the boats.
The hull is partitioned off by solid bulkheads running lengthwise and crosswise
to divide it into watertight compartments. Such bulkheads, which were
not adopted by the West until the 19th century, not only make the ship structurally rigid, but also protect it
against sinking. The lack of a keel is compensated for by a heavy steering oar or rudder, mounted on the centreline
through a watertight housing in the bottom. The rudder can be raised or lowered. The sails are made up of narrow
horizontal linen or matting panels, each secured by its own line, or sheet, so that each sail can be quickly spread
or closed.
^
^By the 9th century AD, Chinese junks were carrying merchants to Indonesia and India. In his Travels, written in 1298,
the Italian traveller Marco Polo praised the bulkhead system, which kept the vessel from sinking “if she springs a leak
by running against a rock, or on being hit by a hungry whale”. By the 15th century junks were sailing to East Africa.
Today, Junks are still used as fishing vessels and for river transport, and sometimes as living quarters.
Larger, more seaworthy junks, reaching a length of 22 m (70 ft) and a displacement of up to 100 tonnes,
are used in coastal waters. The vessels are used mainly by the Chinese, Japanese, and Javanese.

Any icons/Required Advance/settings ideas if I was to implement this as a Chinese/Japanese only unit? Thus far I've set it up simply as a caravel according to the settings (and I've set it up under Engineering for lack of a better pre-Astronomy advance...)

Many ways you could set it up.

I've set it up as "Japanese / Chinese only" in my Unit-Mania modpack - see my Unit-Mania post for details.

Here is what I used (in summary)

Unit : Junk
Type : Naval transport
att/def/move : 0/1/3
Cost : 3
Upgrade to : Galleon
Carry : 3
Available : Astronomy
Unique to : Chinese, Japanese
Abilities : Sink in ocean, Turn to attack

It can't attack, but it's cheaper than a Caravel.
(Cost 3 versus Cost 4)

Here is an Icon I created in the Units_32.pcx file for it.
(Icon for canoe also)

When I saw that picture my mouth hung open for about half a minute. That was about ten years ago I first saw that episode so I probably exaggerate. Very awe-inspiring though.

If you need the sounds for this unit, they can be found here! I would have posted with the flics on the 1st page, but back when I finished this unit I had no idea that I'd need 2 posts to put this on, so it's a pain. Lab Monkey, I just now saw your Unit Library, good work! I'm sorry I didn't do this last night, right after I finished updating the unit.

I will be updating most of my other units, but none as dramatically as this one, so, and this goes for everyone, if you liked my other units, and didn't see anything wrong with them, don't bother getting the updates, as they're pretty small fixes. But this one, I suggest you get the update. I'll be back later on today to post my fixed up units, if I can. Also I have a new unit I'll be posting. If you liked my Junk, you'll love this one!

arg, it didn't post the sounds

Well, it's a long time since anyone posted here, but trying to use this unit and the game crashes without the junkfidget.wav file. I downloaded the second file for the sounds but the fidget wav isn't in it....
