There's a door on the right side of the vehicle, so it isn't a hatch ... I can't imagine what else it could be besides an armored air intake, which (if the chassis was hypothetically based on, say, an eixisting truck design) would make sense.

Although it doesn't look like there is any gap between the plates... It just looks like circular plates riveted together... Maybe they wanted a machine gun mount there or something.

The design could be an early attempt to try and deflect forward enemy fire, since back then most armored things had unwise angles and were blocky compared to the vehicles today. The slanted angles would help deflect shells and such, but I don't know why it spirals in that way. My theory could be wrong.

From the website link..... The 1925 Ansaldo armored car was produced in prototype version only, and was based on a Pavesi heavy tractor. It was armed with a 45mm cannon. Length 4600 mm, width 2600 mm, height 2900 mm, wheels 1500 mm diameter, weight 8250 kg, max speed 40 kmh, crew 3, motor Fiat model 634, 6 cylinder, 8310 cc, 75 HP.

Looking at the diagrams of the vehichle those plates Were exactly that an attempt to deflect enemy fire .... specificaly bullets not really shells though I suppose it is possible it could .... It was designed as a light armored vehchle not a "Tank" Great unit None the less .... Sorry to bring this old post back to life but it is definately a unit worthy of praise ...

Hey ,i got an idea! This unit inspired me to utter that how about having all the unit makers build tonka toys and Have a Bob the Builder and Scobby Doo attacking one another.The sky is the limit!
