New Unit: Goblin Hewer April 13th 2005

this makes me think of a medieval gatling gun

I knew that would be the sticking point... While the slayers are a fine thing in my mind I just couldn't imagine them operating such a machine. They just seem more the charge in type then the sit back and watch type (and while they may be the only ones willing to operate this crazy contraption it just didn't mesh in my mind). I tried several times and the mohawks just didn't look right to me (I left the commander with a red beard though). Making the crew was actually more time consuming than making the machine.

Yes I'm still working on the Pegasus Knight (about halfway animated and it's going fast now that this is out of the way)... and there may be a surprise unit along with it, another one requested several times in my lotteries.

I actually never thought of that problem with the bombard attack... oops...

Hmmm... would it be possible to combine attackA and attackB to one single attackA? and the leave the attackB as it is? (okay, that's a heckuvalong attack animation, but that would solve the problem, if someone wants to use this thing strictly as a bombarding unit?)

Actually the better option might be to just use AttackB on it's own. There will be a small jump from the fortify to the attack with the axes appearing but wouldn't be nearly as long. I've noticed some problems with CIV handling of extremely long animations, it sometimes skips the end. That's why I didn't add the AttackB sequence to the AttackA in the first place.

Simply mad.

Has anyone figured out what kind of sounds this unit should have? Maybe somebody could make some? Vuldacon, you still out there?

The unit's a giant crossbow and a catapult smushed togther, so I was thinking maybe "thwuck, clank, thwuck..." I hope this helps :p

Add a spring 'Twang' in there and you'd have it perfectly... This is the fantasy world's most dangerous wind-up toy.

No kidding, I made it the UU for Rockhome in my mod. Just too awesome. I'm going to be digging for sounds to find something, but my attempts at creating sounds or animations on my own have been bad.

Hmmm...I would think that the LOTR movies or that old Robin Hood movie w/Errol Flynn might have some stuff. <pulls out tape recorder, starts up "The Return of the King"> - Time for some bootleg catapault sounds, yeeha!!!! :smoke:

That would be cool. Good luck, and please post those sounds. ;)

Well, I went through "Return of the King" and found some sound bites. If someone knows how to turn an analog tape into a ".wav" file (or whatever the format is for Windows Media Player) feel free to send me directions via private message. I'm a little bit clumsy when it comes to my computer :crazyeye:

- So far, I got nothing until I hit the first major battle. The chief orc has just said "Release the prisoners!!" - the sounds might be too long so I'm going to rerecord when I get the chance. I did get some crunching sounds for a death animation, however, so some progress :goodjob:

I was just thinking: I thought the Age of Empires games might have some material worth posting. I'll check for a ballista/scorpion/catapult sound...

"Hip Hip Horrah! Tallyho!" - The Squire of Quothos

Great work!

Looks like quite complicated to make :D

@Frostyboy:
Well, creating the graphics for a unit is easy if you have the right tools. Getting sounds for said unit, however...that's just plain madness. And besides, I'm getting sounds the "Ben Burtt" way (the dude who's done the sound for the Star Wars movies) :p

@tjedge1:
I'm not sure if the sounds can come through as planned. Someone might just have to raid the catapult and archer sounds from Civ3 for the unit. I tried my hardest, believe me. :( <breaks out into sobs>. Dang tape recorder!!

Well, creating the graphics for a unit is much more than just having the right tools.

Here's some sounds for the attack anims :lol: (comprised of the sounds gathered from frigate, impi, immortal and babylonian bowman :p )
