New Unit: Settler Wagon

Maybe you could give Scouts and Explorers the ability to cross mountains.

They are units that "explore"

Let them explore mountains

I've been playing with the idea of making mountains impassable, too. What kept me from doing it were some random maps I encountered, which included mountain ranges from one coast to the other without any passes. These ranges would completely isolate some regions on the map.
OTOH, well, that's just another kind of island, as long as these ranges aren't a closed cycle and maybe even trap a civ in isolation (till a bomber or heli comes along from outside their little world :) ).

Maybe I'll give it a try.

I suggest that a VERY limited number of units be able to pass mountains.

1. Scouts
2. Explorers
3. Guerillas
4. Workers
5. Flying transport units (ie, helicopters)

Imagine. Iron deposit over the far side of a mountain range so you can't get a city over there. So you HAVE to use an outpost, and you have to defend it.. with what? Guerrillas are your only option!

Until you can build an airport over there and fly over, or sail around, the mountains are literally impassable! A true barrier!

It also means Guerillas would have a place of safety, by literally taking to the hills, and can only be brought down by.. bombardment!

If you give the Mongol Keshik the ability to pass mountains, the UU might just become useful ;)

Cool, but shouldn't there be some luggage in the back? ...
Just put a white canvas over the back opening, maybe also on the front, so it does not look empty.

:D Oh, and rename the thread, Kryten, to Impassable Mountains.

... and make the horse smaller, since they weren't bred to be larger until after "ancient times." ;)

And how would you do this?
Mountains can be flagged as impassable,
or they can be made impassable to wheeled (without roads).

Assuming that you wouldn't want to make ALL other ground units wheeled, have you found a way to do were suggesting? I was going to attempt your idea and then "Oops, there is no way to implement that!"

Impassable Terrain
-----------------------
I?m sure that many of you have tried this, but if you haven?t, then I strongly urge those of you with PTW to make forests impassable to ?wheeled? units, give ALL mounted & siege units the ?wheeled? ability (that?s all horsed units/Elephants/Tanks/siege and settlers, but not Mech Infantry, as I assume they would dismount to fight), and last of all make mountains impassable to ALL units.

This has a wonderful effect on the game, by making it much more of a challenge.
Here are some of the effects :-

* Provinces = mountains now become a major barrier, as they are in reality, and cause some areas of the map to become semi-isolated ?provinces? with only the odd mountain pass (two mountains meeting diagonally) connecting it with the rest of the continent....'The Portugal Effect'.
(And no, Hannibal did NOT take Elephants over the top of mountains?.he went through mountain passes, such as the Brenner Pass)

* Restrictive Terrain = Horsemen and Tanks will only be able to enter forests and jungles if there is a road (Battle of the Bulge anyone?), which is historically correct.
Ever tried galloping a horse through a wood off a path? I have. It still hurts! :p
(BTW, contrary to popular belief, Elephants don?t live in jungles. They live on plains, and actually damage trees, thus stopping them from spreading)

* Roads/Railways = it helps to stop the entire map from being totally covered with these eyesores.

* Barbarians = sometimes a Barbarian Encampment will appear on a mountain tile, and you cannot storm it as mountains are impassable!
The only way to get rid of them is to build a city nearby and wait for your borders to expand and eventually engulf the encampment.
(This can keep barbarians in the game for far longer, making them much more of a threat).

* Sea Power = this also becomes much more important, as the only way around these ?terrain barriers? will be by sea?.and if you are sending vulnerable settlers by sea, then you will want to protect them?.and intercept other peoples transport ships in order to stop them from colonising this virgin land.... ;)
(Some people like to make settlers & workers transportable by air. This is a mistake, as it makes sea power?.already weak in Civ3?.even more redundant.
Make the buggers travel by sea, and give Privateers and Submarines something to attack! :D )

Of course, if no unit can enter mountains, then no roads can be connected to mountain resources. So you will have to move the mountain strategic and luxury resources to other terrain (I would leave bonus resources such as gold in the mountains, as they don?t need roads).
This also means that mines cannot be built on mountains, so I like to make mountains give 2 shields instead of one (this is less than the 3 that a mine would give, but hey, you won?t have to wait for the mine to be built).

Anyway, if you haven?t already tried this, give it a go.
I think that like myself, you will be suitably impressed with the outcome.
(?I very much doubt that you will persuade anyone to make all these changes Kryten, but keep trying anyway!?)
what the heck? i think that motorized wheeled units shouldn't apply to this. tanks can drive through a jungle, but more slowly. since when is it impossible to climb or fly over a mountian. if we do what u say, than primitive civ's will win, since the tanks can't go through forests, but archers could. in real life, we'd airlift a tank through a jungle.

Nice Unit Kryten...yee haa.
Here are some Large and Small .pcx files for use and I put in a single units_32.pcx from your file.

New edit...The Small.pcx is now with a White background as normal game small.pcx icons but the Large.pcx still has a little collor to see the wagon more clearly.

I've been working on the Ancient Fantasy Mod, The idea of Ancient Civ's crossing dangerous terrains at all is unlikely, SO Most of the Terrain is 'Wheeled' and I've also made the Later Unit of settler, scout and worker, which are not wheeled, but the terrain costs to add roads is much higher.

Probably most already know this but the Settler Wagon can be used along with the Regular game Settler. Just Omit the .amb file and rename the .ini and sound and flc files for the Settler Wagon. This allows the Settler Wagon to be used with the Editor settings desired and does not interfere with being able to build and use the Normal Settler. As an example, if I wanted to load a settler in a Balloon and I only had the Settler Wagon, it would be very Strange watching my Hot Air Ballon carry a Horse and Covered Wagon with a Settler. This method allows Both types of Game Settlers and works very well.

...The Settler Wagon is a Great addition to the game but I use it as a separate Settler unit that travels faster and costs more to build. (This way it has nothing to do with the normal Settler) I have it set so that it becomes Obsolete with Nationalism (Rifleman). Required Resource Horses and cannot be Airlifted. The AI uses it well too.

...In the case of the "impassable mountains" being discussed to a great length here, it is also nice to be able to use a Balloon, Blimp, plane or helicopter to fly a settler over those mountains....just my thoughts.

Thank you very, very much for the Settler Wagon civilopeadia picties Vuldacon! :goodjob:

If it is ok with you, I have attached a zip file with them (minus the shadows) to the first post of this thread.

Thanks again. :)

Here everybody is a preview.....

Thank you very much for this unit! I am adding it in as a sort of 'level 2 settler' called a Colonist in my new mod. If you are interested I am making it a settler with 2 movement that can also build colonies and clear forests but costs 3 population to build and comes with Theory of Gravity. It will be one of my 'niche' units - buildable by Germany, Russia, America, France, England, Spain, Scandinavia, Netherlands, Portugal

That is unless Kryten objects! :)

STOP BUMPING ALL OF THE OLD UNITS PLEASE AND THEN ASK IF U CAN USE IT IN UR MOD..........ur just doing it to get posts
