Forgive me if this has been asked and answered elsewhere...

Do the AI ever fight each other, independently of you? I'm sure they do, but, can they actually destroy one another? Why would/wouldn't they?

yes they can fight each other and destroy each. you will be notified by your foreign advisor.

Generally speaking, higher difficulty levels result in more AI/AI wars. In my Chieftan games, the AI never attacked each other (or me). In my Monarch games, there's typically two or three wars per era. It all depends on how well the AI can produce units and generate commerce to pay for those units- hence why the frequency of wars rises with difficulty. :)

Thanks. I keep forgetting that the reason I'm doing so well, and am so advanced beyond my opponents, and that they've never attacked me, is that I'm playing on the easiest level (this is my first time, after a few false starts that went where I didn't want them to go), with the AI set at the least aggressive level. I just didn't want The Man harrassing me all the time, and then I went and became The Man, wiping out the French and then the Spanish. It's just too tempting...

Smellincoffee said it, one reason to play at least in Monarch. No long time sice I jumped to Monarch few months perhaps and it's way more cooler than Chieftain or Warlord. I never tried Regent tho.

When AI decleares war to other AI, I can see opportunity there.

AI fighting AI is like music to your ears. Instead of building markets, libraries, banks, unis and the like, the warring AIs will be building units, units and more units - most of which end up dying. Since the AIs love republic and democracy, they will also be creating WW all over the place.

The only bad thing about AI wars is when a big civ is beating up a little civ. It's not in your long term interest to let an AI get large and powerful.

Go out and attack one of them. If the strong is too powerful, attack the strong, else the weaker one.
