Newbie question: promotions

What does it take to have a unit offered a promotion? I've had several hunters, for instance, all gaining experience by combat, and only one is offered a promotion to ranger. How do I get the others upgraded?

(And would there be another thread where I might have posted this question? I hate to clutter up the forum.)

They have to be in the city radius of a city with a hunting lodge (or the appropriate building for other units). Some units are just "within your empire" (like adepts->mages).

The "within your empire units" are the units with no building requirements.

Make sure you understand the difference between promotions and upgrades. Promotions are what you get for gaining levels via experience. Upgrades are what you're looking for, which other people have already explained.

And some upgrades require a certain experience level like the high priests, inquisitors, etc.

City radius -- that's the ticket. Till now I've been stuck with mostly weak units. This should make a big difference. Thanks.
