Is it possible to change things in the PTW file in the editor? I made a scenario which allowed all 24 civs on the map and also I changed the colors around for the civs. However, since it is considered changing the rules, my victories are not recorded in the hall of fame? I was hoping to be able to play all 24 civs and have the victories posted in the hall of fame. Any help with this would be great.

Hi everybody.
I am really new to civ3. I bought the game 1 week ago.
I went throught the entire manual and there is a lot of information about what the game does but not how to do it.
I guess this forum is for that.
So I start by asking what is the nest way to start playing, just settle where the opening screen shows the settler; if I start scanning the map the other civs get ahead of me. The trade is horrible. I always get in touch with third-world- country civs, they do not have money to pay for my resources, they want my resources for free and they ask for my most advance technology for free, so I say f....you and then boommmm.... they declared war in me, specially those Zulu bastards.
Coming from Pharaoh and Emperor where trade is really nice I am quite disappointed with this game, I hate going poor, with a few penies in my pocket.
Thanks guys.

espartaco- The AI will demand stuff from you (demanding tribute) if they think they are stronger than you. You want a good sized territory and (most importantly) have a good sized army. Sometimes they may demand tribute when you are stronger, but just tell them to 'buzz off' and they may back down or call your bluff and you are at war. Beat them up a little and they will leave you alone.

The AI usually doesn't have any money early in the game, so it's usually better to trade tech for tech instead of tech for money.

highgarden-not that I know of. If any changes are made to the default rules, the scores won't be saved in your HoF. I dont' know if Firaxis will change this, because there are other people who don't like this either.

Yes. There are many many very important fixes and changes to gamplay, some subtle, some not so subtle.

What difficulty level are you playing?

The AI "cheats" and it can see all your cities if it has a map. If it sees one of your cities with zero or one defenders it it is more likely to declare war. It stil might declare war anyway, but this is one thing to watch. Try to have a reasonably strong military.

One way to play (not the only way of course) is to play on a huge panageia map as an expansionist civ. If you build 5 or more scouts you will get a temporary tech lead from goody huts. In that case, if some AI decares war against you, build embassies in the countries that are near your enemy but not at war with you and bribe them to attack your enemy (military alliance). I don't play single player games now because, well, the AI is dumb, but the last time an AI attacked me in a single player game I allied 6 other AIs to attack my enemy. You might be able to do this with cash also, but the good thing about trading techs for declaring war is that you can trade the same tech to all of them for declaring war if you do it quickly.

If you can keep the AIs at war with each other they will start falling behind in culture, commerce, everything.

sumthinelse - I am playing the easiest level with standard continental maps, mild temperature, 4 billions years and I like the persians - you see all my the settings are somewhere in the middle.
So far I have seen only two civs for quite a long time, almost the entire ancient age and the two neiborns do not have made contact with any other. I try to get to map making very quickly in order to build a galley and then go to settle somewhere else.
Last night I got a good ahead of the others but I was declared war for refusing to give one of my techs. That happened like 4 times and each time I gave up. It pointless to go to war at so early stage.
I just installed the patch 1.29 hope this would improve my gaming. In the mean time I printed like 30 pages to read from the war strategy section. I found something about how to get started that sounds very interesting. Thanks to all of you for the hints. reading time.............

It is NOT pointless to go to war this soon. Especially at the lowest level. I'm almost sure theý're just bluffing. Patch 1.29 won't solve this. It never hurts to read the FAQ, but you can learn a lot by playing.

No, it's one human against -- 7 AIs in your case? So even though they are dumb there are lots of them, so you start out with a 1 in 8 chance of winning if all civs are equally skillful.

This is what I have in my PediaIcons.txt:

#RACE_SPANISH
art\leaderheads\x_isabell victory neutral.pcx
art\advisors\IL_all.pcx

Ofcource I have added the IL_all.pcx in that directory. This xxx.pcx file is THE file the games is using for its leaderhead in the foreign advisor window in the game. This picture is a the original file of the PTW game. I added a civ in CIV3 from PTW

WELCOME
As for starting position, there are some strategy hints posted throughout this site, I for one take the position started and if I have to move my capital, so be it.

As for what you described, the civs are not offering a trade, they are demanding tribute. You either give them what they want or risk war. They do this because they see you as weak as compared to them. To avoid this, make sure you have a strong army but still sometimes they still make demands.

No, wait! Have a little bit of fun before you get it! Now that there's a bunch of exploits and cheats all discovered for 1.07, you can do a lot of things. Demand 999999 gpt and get it, along with all the AI's cities. Trade worthless techs for boku bucks! I did that when I had to reinstall it! :) :D :D
