My fortified Veteran Numidian Mercenary 2.3.1 (PTW civ special unit) was just attacked and beaten by a Regular Archer 2.1.1. I didn't think he even had a chance. But I was able to replay the fight over and over, and the Archer won convincingly every time.

Assuming your mercenary was on grassland the archer wins about 20% of the time. Take a look at this combat calculator:

Question: What combat calcs are there that allow you to enter the values yourself, instead of having to select a unit from a list. I need one to use in a modded map, and none of the ones I've found will let me enter all the values I need. The one linked in the post above almost works, but it will not let you enter the defense value (I need to enter a defensive value of 3.1)

Does education cancel the GL when YOU research it, or when any civ discovers it?

I was under the impression that it was the latter, until a recent game where I had the GL, and then through trades, I found out that another civ had Education (and wouldn't trade it with me). So I ended the turn, and the next turn the Sci Adv told me "we have learned Education from Civ A and Civ B," and then the GL was rendered obsolete.

Clarification would be appreciated; thanks.

@cromagnon:

It is the first - when you get education the GL is obsolete.

This also applies to all other wonders.

I don't think I've ever had a wonder go obsolete except when *I* had just gained the relevant tech (Oracle-Theology, Library-Education, etc).

I can't believe that is a coincidence, so I *think* it must be when you get the tech. (However I play on lower levels so am often at least tech-equal, so it could be a coincidence).

edit - beaten by 2 minutes - too much typing, not enough info!

Quoting vs. quick reply is also a factor that decides whether you reply first or second ;)

Can anyone explain "golden age" to me? What are the benefits of one and how do they trigger?

@drewshark:
A golden age is a 20 turn period during which time you get +1 shield and +1 commerce per tile.

You can trigger a golden age by winning a fight against another civ (not barbarians) with your Unique Unit. The other way is to build wonders that can trigger golden ages for each of your civ traits.

The information for individual wonders and civ's is in the civelopedia.

Edit: Silly mistake corrected thanks to Mathias :)

A golden age is triggered the first time one of your UUs wins a battle, or when you complete wonders to match your civs traits, but you can only have one GA each game. For example, if you are Persia and you use an immortal to attack an enemy, and that immortal wins, you will enter a golden age. Or, if you are America and you build the Colossus (expansionist) and the Pyramids (industrious), this will trigger the golden age.

The benefits of a golden age are that each tile work by one of your citizens will produce an extra shield and/or commerece if that tile is already producing one of the same. Under despotism, the benefits of a golden age are limited due to despotism restrictions. Tiles such as forests and mined bonus grassland that normally produce 2 shields will not see the extra shield because despotism prevents you from using the third shield. Mined hills, however will get the extra shield, because they would normally produce three.

Edit: anarres is just too quick, or maybe I was just trying to be too thorough...

Edit: Just noticed error in anarres post. Golden age give +1 shield and +1 commerce, not +1 food.

Sorry guys - mistakes happen.

I also noticed that I omitted that you need at least 1 shield or commerce already in a worked tile to get the bonus, and the fact you can only get one golden age :rolleyes:

So there would be times where you wouldn't want your golden age to kick in yet? Does that ever affect stategy(ie) delaying using UU in battle if in despotism)?

Just got modern armour in a huge pangea game on warlord, and i'm currently abandoning a donkey-load of little ****ty towns that will never do anything for me, as they are all in civil disorder with the obligatory war that happens when you get MA first. I have came up with two queries for you blokes...

A) What are the pros/cons of abandoning towns? Should i do it?

B) As i have acquired about a dillion slaves, i am getting annoyed with having to move them all one by one all the time. How can i move a stack of units at the same time?

If you abandon a town as soon as it comes into your possession, with it having a majority of citizens from the rival civ, then you will suffer the same reputation hit as if you had razed the town. You could just starve the town down to 1 person and produce a worker, thereby eliminating the city without any consequences. It's really your choice whether you want to take a rep hit or not; whether a clean rep is important to you or not.

you can stack-move the same type of unit by pressing 'J' if it's non-ptw. Not sure about PTW, I think it's ctrl-J to move the same type of unit, or something like that, J to move all units.

Gotcha, that's obviously why I'm not receiving Christmas cards off the rest off the Civs. I'll have to start starving them down. As for the mass moving of units, do i just highlight one and press 'j' or do i have to do something in particular (non-PTW)?

K here goes... found this site and registered JUST to ask this question lol... I've played several games and from one to the next the frequency with which the people offer to build me a palace improvement varies GREATLY. Like in the current game im playing I've only had 3 improvements offered and im at 500AD and have built almost every single great wonder... what gives? Is it affected by the civ you choose or something? Cuz I'm nuts about seeing my palace improve lol, so what can I do to help it along? Tx in advance!

Just press J while one of the units is activated. You move it just like with the Go-to command.

I think it just varies from game to game. I've had a game before when i didn't have a single improvement and then it gave me 5 in the one go. Try making more than one at the same time... it might be behind! I reckon it's just random...

To quote Mike Whitney (who only the Aussie guys will know!) your a legend Mr DiamondzAndGunz, that will save me alot of time and loud expletives.... You've just made someones day.

Look at my posts number... it's staying on 31! Hey Thunderfall, i'm getting ripped off!
