I have been playing premade maps, primariy Europe, but they always overlap and the nation on Britain can colonize Russia first

Also, if you have PTW, you can edit it and make it so that the map doesn't wrap accross, therefore making it impossible for britain to colonize Russia by going around the world. If you don't, you can just edit the map and put lots of water between them, and you can even add a "border," sort of. Add a strip of mountains, not connected to any land on either side, going from the top to the bottom of the map. This will prevent ships from sailing across, and since its mountains, they can't found cities there to sail through.

How do you make a colony? Also, how do you make a radar tower? I already have radio and almost every available tech.

Move your worker to the tile where you want your colony/radar towel to be at, then click the shortcut key at the bottom of the screen. Doing so will consume your worker. :)

I've searched all around this forum and one on infogrames and can't find anything similar to what I'm experiencing. I don't see that these issues are addressed by the 1.21 patch either. I just bought PTW about two weeks ago but just downloaded the patch today.

First problem- I'm Isabella and Bismarck just declared war on me, so I send five swordmen to capture Heidelberg, but when they kill the last spearmen defending the city, they destroy it automatically without my consent. Military advisor never asks if I want to install a new governor.

Second problem- I discover Republic and have a revolution. As soon as I install republic as the new gov't , over half my cities go into civil disorder. Makes no sense whatsoever. Can anyone explain?

Next problem- I'm into the 1600's now and 30% into the industrial age. I have 34 cities- 13 of which have banks, but the game refuses to give me the opportunity to build Wall Street. Extremely irritating.

Another problem- From what I've read, an outpost built on a mountain is supposed to allow seeing everything up to four squares away. I built an outpost on a coastal mountain to see way out into the ocean so I'd know when the French were coming, but it had no effect. Why not?

Last problem- All AI except England (France, Iroquois, Celts Vikings, Germans, Japan) have total and completely unprovoked hatred of me. Why? I haven't made a demand tribute to anyone, although I declared war against the Iroquois once when they invaded my territory without cause. That's when I saved the game and gave it the filename Irritatingquois. But I haven't broken any deals and I don't go traipsing through AI territory. The Vikings even declared war on me one turn after I sold them Nationalism. You'd think they'd be polite. Go figure. I guess this last problem is a result of my first problem.

Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize if these issues have already been addressed, but I searched hi and low but could not find threads declaring other players to be having these same problems. Thanks.

One of my units was upgraded to leader status. I used him to create an army. But I could not attack with the army, nor could I add units to the army.

Can you explain how to do this?

thanks,
Ben E. Gas

First Problem: the city is autorazed if it is a pop of 1 and has no built up culture.

Second Issue: Might be the effects of anarchy for that turn. Also, I believe that under despotisim 3 of your garrison troops help with happines while under republic it is only one, thus less happiness in the cities.

third thing: Not sure. Sorry

Four: Don;'t have ptw so can't answer.

Five: Did you break anytreaties when your declared war on the Iroquois. Also, if you do not actively engage in trading with civs, their attitude changes. Some one actually has some mathematival farmula on the effects around here somewhere.

Move the unit you want to add in the army to the same tile where the army is, then click the "join" icon at the bottom of the screen, or hit "L" on the keyboard. By the way, an army itself without any unit does not have any attack/defense value. :)

an army needs units in it to attack. Move the army to the unit you want to add, or the unit you want to add to the army. Click on the unit and chose the load feature, much like when you put the unit into a transport.

BEWARE: once the unit is place in the army, you can not get it back out. Unless this has changed in PTW.

if the city only is a size of "1" then it is automatically razed, thats all i can answer
i just got the game myself

If a city is population 1 and has no cultural improvements at all, it will be razed automatically -- you have no control over this (unfortunately). Only after a culture-producing improvemnt is built or the population grows will you have an option to keep or raze the city.

Second problem- I discover Republic and have a revolution. As soon as I install republic as the new gov't , over half my cities go into civil disorder. Makes no sense whatsoever. Can anyone explain?

Are you at war? A feature of the game called "war weariness" makes you r citizens unhappy during prolonged warfare. There are numerous threads on war weariness and it is too long to go into here -- but just based on your description, I'd offer up the following facts: the effects of war weariness (citizen unhappiness) does not show under Despotism, Monarchy or Communism -- it only manifests itself under Republic or Democracy.

If you're not at war: Under Despotism, Monarchy and Communism, you can use units (a maximum of 2,3, and 4 per city, respectively, for each government) as "military police": 2 units in a city under despotism will cause 2 citizens that would otheriwse be unhappy to be be content. A switch to Republic or Democracy removes the military police effects, which means you will suddenly have more citzens unhappy than you had under the previous government.

Before you ask "Why in the heck would I ever go to Republic or Democracy, then?" -- under these two forms of government, your empire-wide production of gold goes up significantly resulting in much greater scientific advancement and much greater income (specifically, every city tile worked by a city laborer that already produces one or more gold will produce an extra gold in a Republic or Democracy). Although vastly oversimplifying the game mechanics and strategic choices, many players consider Monarchy & Communism "wartime" govenrments and Republic & Democracy "peacetime" governments.

Next problem- I'm into the 1600's now and 30% into the industrial age. I have 34 cities- 13 of which have banks, but the game refuses to give me the opportunity to build Wall Street. Extremely irritating.

Under PTW, 5 stock exchanges (not banks) are required for Wall Street. Stock Exchanges become available with the tech "The Corporation."

Another problem- From what I've read, an outpost built on a mountain is supposed to allow seeing everything up to four squares away. I built an outpost on a coastal mountain to see way out into the ocean so I'd know when the French were coming, but it had no effect. Why not?

Can't help you. I've not built an outpost before.

Managing AI attitude and understanding how it is affected is complex. A poster named Bamspeedy recently posted a comprehensive guide to AI attitude calculations -- do a search for "attitude" by username "Bamspeedy." (I'd provide a link, but the server seems awfully busy at the moment).

Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize if these issues have already been addressed, but I searched hi and low but could not find threads declaring other players to be having these same problems. Thanks.

A lot of these questions concern pretty straightforward application of certain game mechanics -- but the mechanics can be pretty complex for a new player. You should read the game manual for background (though be forewarned that it contains many mistakes), then read the FAQ thread (it is located at the top of the forum), and then also peruse the War Academy -- it is a link available from the home page for CFC. The manual will give you a broad background, the FAQ will correct the mistakes of the manual and make points more clearly, and the War Academy will start offering insight into how the sometimes complex game mechanics can be utilized to have more fun and be more successful.

You can also ask specific questions in the "Newbies Questions" thread (also at the top of the forum) -- just go there, ask a question on any subject, and you'll most likely get a very quick response.

EDIT: Welcome to CFC :)

In PTW, there is a new improvement, Stock Exchange, that comes with the tech Corporation. You have to have five of those to build Wall Street.
Build Stock Exchange in 5 of the cities with banks, and you should be able to build Wall Street.

A question, about what year do you guys reach Industrial? It takes me forever. I play on regent, but all my offers for tech from other civs recieve the same, 'heck no' attitude. How can you reach industrial faster, or develope tech alliances with the AI?

Welcome to CFC, marceagleye. You asked some very good questions in an intelligent manner. Best of all you didn't use the words "cheat" or "bug" in describing the situations you'd run into. Very refreshing! Enjoy the game.

N0body, this is not an easy question. Here are a few pointers.

- You must make money. This can be done through improving your land with workers (roads, gold tiles, etc...). Also build marketplaces and banks to make even moe money. Switch to republic or democracy government type.
- Build imporvements to increase your science rate, like libraries and universities.
- Be careful about your reputation against the AI civs. Don't break deals (trade deals last for 20 turns before they can be cancelled). Don't abuse the Right of Passage to sneak-attack. These things affect your reuptation. A bad rep is bad for trading.
- Trade a lot. Tech for tech, tech for gold/luxuries, etc... I always notice that around the middle ages tech trade starts to pay off. You get more of it once the time progresses.

In general: check out the war academy and the strategy & tips forum.

Depends. General rule: Higher difficulty levels increase ai's research, thus trading for techs spares research time for human player. (On lower levels, you'd have to develop almost everything on your own.)

You should ask them what they would like to have for a certain tech and try to *improve* that deal from your point of view. If they still refuse, you have not enough funds, per-turn-income (then you might raise the tax slider and start new negotiations), resources etc to offer. Well, of course it's hard to trade with a reputation hit (I guess this is your problem). Take care of your reputation, visit war academy on CFC and read about trading/reputation. Have a look on succesion game's board.
As you want to increase your research rate, make sure that your cities produce lots of commerce. Commerce amount is devided by tax & lux slider to calculate the number of beakers (see any city display to get details) that are added to your research development each turn. Build roads (have enough workers!) on every working tile to enlarge city's *raw* commerce production, build certain city improvements to optimize the benefit of commerce production (library etc for beakers, marketplace etc for income/happiness; also temples etc to keep people content -> can lower lux slider). Commerce also depends on government, democracy is best for a medium non-spread empire at peace. Parts of commerce are lost to corruption. Prevent to much corruption by courthouses, police station, optimal placement of Forbidden Palace, contingently move your capitol.
You may also choose a scientific civ, research improvements are cheaper and you gain a free tech entering a new age. Commercial civs produce more, yeah, commerce on center squares (and have less corruption).
Trade your techs for reasonable gold-per-turn payments: *steal* their commerce and *pay* your scientists.
If you're really backwards, don't *waste* any commerce on research (put tax slider to 100% or highest percentage possible due to lux slider). Then your whole commerce output is transformed into gold. You simply buy missing techs from ai.
Hire ONE scientist in any (far from capitol/FP) city to have at least the worst research rate without spending any money, put your aim on the most expensiv tech (this should also be done during anarchy).
If you are (re-)negotiating peace, make sure to demand techs. This almost always possible after an ancient war.

With the persian, i can't upgrade my warriors to immortals?
but with another civ i can upgrade warriors to swordmans.
is it a bug?

ok, thank you !
i've got the impression that there is no path 1.29 for the french version,
well i am going to buy PTW as soon as i'll be able to.
(if a patch is needed to fix this problem, it was actually a bug...)
