Simone1974,

Upgrade cost is 2 gold per shield difference between the 2 units.

Spears cost 20 shields, pikes 30 shields, so the cost is

(30 - 20) x 2 = 20 gold

Since horsemen cost 30 shields, and the UU is 60 shields, the upgrade cost is

(60 - 30) x 2 = 60 gold

What do these things do?

Favorite Government
Shunned Government
City Production Emphasis

The favourite and shunned governement for teh civ the human player controls, means absolutely nothing. But an AI civ will like you more if you are both in that civ's favourite government, and like you less if you (but not that civ) is in that civ's shunned government.

It is also possible that favourite/shunned government makes it more/less likely for an AI civ to be in that government, but this isn't tested (AFAIK), and in any case, this is at most a very moderate modifier when the AI civ chooses government.

Thanks TNO! This migth influence diplomacy a bit.

What about the City Production Emphasis?

It means you've already pretty much won, but you're still playing to max out your score. You make sure that you're not going to win by domination and other things - ask the expert milkers though. They know more about it.

I have had a good look through the FAQ for this but could not find the answer. Probably because the answer is so simple and I will be embarrassed by the answer :)

My question is - How do you switch on and off the display of the civ's name after the city's name?

I think that when downloading games such as GOTM it changes my settings for me. I can't find the setting in preferences.

Thanks.

From H00se Neckts: What does the term "milking" meAn?
All successful "Milked" games end at the latest possible year, which is 2050AD. The reason for milking the game and not winning the game as soon as possible is because the end-of-game-bonus is less than the score you will receive by:
1. Controlling the maximum number of tiles without triggering a Domination Victory (See MapStat utility.)
2. Creating as many Happy/Content/Specialist citizens in your cities.

You can also receive points by discovering Future Techs BUT the number of points you get is, in practice, not worth the trouble! ;)

This may seem very self-evident: One has to be careful, while milking, not to trigger a Domination Victory OR a Cultural Victory...........otherwise you obviously won't make it to 2050AD!........thus terminating prematurely The Milk Run! ;)

Milking has become most significant in Game Of The Month (GOTM) and High Score Hall Of Fame (HOF) competition......HOWEVER, for GOTM, Aeson et al have developed a scoring system that provides for a higher End-Of-Game Bonus thus providing more incentive for players to Win the game at the earliest opportunity and not keep the game going (viz. "Milk") until 2050AD.

My understanding is that the Aeson Scoring System is not effect for the HOF competition, thus Milking will remain the way to get the highest scores for Standard, Large & Huge maps. However, Small maps have recently been accepted for submission to HOF and it's quite possible that a "Fast Finish" could generate a higher score than Milking to 2050AD!

Incidentally, to see your current score, click on the "H" character on the bottom right corner of the main map screen. The "H" may not appear for the first few rounds of the game.

On the preferences menu (ctrl+p) check the colorblind help option

Are there any group move commands to move all the units on a tile, or all the units of a type on a tile at once, because I have 70 arty to move from A to B to C to D and its gonna take a long time.

I am using original civ 3 with the latest patch

Press the "J" key, then move the mouse to where you want the units to move. Only like-kind units will move.

BTW, with PTW you can do this with mouse-only AND you can either move ALL units in a stack or only like-kind units.

Another reason to buy Play The World! ;)

I just got PTW and razed a neighbor's city. There is now a destroyed city graphic on that tile. I figured it would go away after a few turns but it has not. I settled a town 1 tile away in a better location but that graphic just won't go away.

Will it eventually go away?

The city ruins will go away when you carry out any worker improvement on that tile.
