Just a quick couple of questions, I've been playing CivIII since Christmas, never played any of the other Civs so I'm a real newbie :) and yes, if it matters I am playing the patched version.

1) load/unload for ships.. I have never gotten that option the only way I can get a unit onto a ship is to Goto the ship, same thing for getting off the boat. Doesn't seem to matter if there is a harbor or not. Any ideas?

2) what are the "mod packs" I keep hearing mentioned?

3) Is there any way to save a map for future use? Not just saving the game at the start but saving the map its self so that it can be used in a different game with new civs? The husband type person here has an interesting map he would like to keep for other games but we're not sure how.

Thanks!:)

1) Load/Unload for ships usually appears when the ship is in a city. When a unit is in the city that the ship is in, there should be a load button and if there is a unit in the ship, right click on the city, wake the unit in the ship and unload if necessary.

2) Mod packs are sort of personal touches some people put on the game, such as additional civs, features, adjustments, etc. They can be found in the Civ3-Creation & Customization forum.

3) Dunno about maps myself, try saving it in the senario folder. Someone else should help here.

2. There are two main kinds of modpacks: those that change the rules and those that make the game easier to understand.

Whether or not to use modpacks which change the rules is a personal decision. On the other hand, modpacks which make the game more clear and easier to understand seem to me indispensable.

If you are serious about not letting any advantage get away from you, you will find the MoodBadge Modpack will GREATLY reduce your frustration. It makes the F1 advisor screen much clearer without changing any rules. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9362

Spotting those damn elusive resources (like coal in jungles) is much simpler if you use:

If you are not concerned if your cities go into disorder and would prefer to only fix the problem after it strikes, then Mood Badges will not make any difference to you.

If you don't mind not knowing where resources are (or actually enjoy looking for them) then you could do without the second one.

Can someone list all the different ways to establish an embassy, the only time I can create one is when I have just researched writing?
There must be something obvious I am missing... =(

There are actually two other ways that I know of.

1 - You have to find your capital city on the map (the one with the star besides its name). Double click that star, and you'll be taken to the embassy prompt.

2 - ctrl-e will do the trick too.

But no, UntameBear, there is nothing obvious that you were missing. The "establish embassy" feature is hidden in a dark corner of the rules. It took me forever to find it.
